Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone came out almost twenty years ago and the director, Chris Columbus, is looking to get back into the Harry Potter universe.

Original Director Takes Walk Down Memory Lane

Chris Columbus, director of the first three Harry Potter films, spoke to Variety about possibly directing a movie adaptation of The Cursed Child. The Cursed Child is a play that takes place 19 years after the Battle of Hogwarts, picking up after the epilogue in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Columbus also reminisced on his time on the original films, saying it was an honor and privilege to work on all three of his films.

“I had every expectation that I would probably be fired within the first two weeks,” he said. “I was very, I don’t want to say anxious, but aware of the fact that if I screw this up, I probably will never work again. And I would have millions of fans at my door just infuriated. I knew I was taking on something fairly gigantic, and I’ve never been involved in a project that had so much scrutiny.”

Columbus was also a producer for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. David Yates directed the last four films and the Fantastic Beasts movies, including the upcoming third installment. Yates has yet to say anything about a possible film adaptation of the play.

The Cast Says Their Part

Tom Felton has been optimistic about possibly going back to the franchise. In June 2021, he talked to People magazine about reprising his role. It gives us hope that he’ll be a part of it if any new adaptations come up.

“If you’re asking me will I dye my hair blonde again to be Draco, abso-bloody-lutely. Either [him or Lucius], I’ll play Draco’s kid if you want! Any chance to be a Malfoy again would be greatly accepted.”

Daniel Radcliffe said that he’d prefer Sirius or Remus if HBO does a remake of the franchise. However, he hasn’t ruled out returning to Harry entirely.

“It’s a tricky one,” Radcliffe told Andy Cohen in 2016. “You never want to close a door on anything, especially something that’s been so good to me. But I do think, at the moment, I’m definitely not at a stage where I would feel comfortable going back to it. Who knows if in 10, 20 years I would feel differently about that, and I think I’ve got a little while before I’m sort of age-appropriate for this Harry.”

Rupert Grint also hasn’t ruled out coming back to the franchise. But he does think it would take some time for it to feel right. He told Esquire earlier this year that it’s best to leave it alone right now. In December 2020, he told ComicBook.com that he’d “up for it at the right time.”

Emma Watson is still on the fence. She hasn’t said much about the possibility, but when asked a few years ago about The Cursed Child being possibly adapted, she said, “Definitely nothing planned at the moment.”

What Is ‘The Cursed Child’?

The play debuted in 2016 and was a hit when it opened on Broadway in 2018. The play was written by Jack Thorne, John Tiffany, and J.K. Rowling. It follows Harry as he grapples with his past while his son, Albus, struggles to live up to his family’s legacy. The original book’s characters are now supporting characters in the play.

Many new characters are also introduced while expanding on characters from the original epilogue.

One of those new characters is Delpini Diggory, a colorful-haired helper at St. Oswald’s taking care of her “Uncle” Amos Diggory. Despite not going to Hogwarts or another wizarding school, she’s smart and talented and has a knack for Dark Magic.

We also see Albus sorted into Slytherin and befriend Draco’s son, Scorpius. They are the main characters we follow as they uncover dark secrets that nobody was expecting.

We don’t know if the play will ever be made into a movie, but other Harry Potter projects are in the works. HBO is working on a potential Harry Potter series, but that’s all they’ve come out with. And the Hogwarts Legacy video game is on the way, expected to drop next year.
