Kelly Clarkson understands the holidays are not always the most wonderful time of the year.

The singer, who filed for divorce from her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock in June 2020, opened up about her emotional holidays during her NBC special, When Christmas Comes Around.

Wrote a Holiday Song For “People Feeling Alone”

While most holiday music is about feeling joyous or falling in love, The Voice judge decided to do something a little different this year.

Clarkson introduced her new song, “Merry Christmas (To the One I Used to Know),” during her holiday special and revealed the song is for those who feel a little lost around this time of year.

“I wrote this song for me but also because there aren’t many holiday songs for people feeling alone or lost or just plain sad, other than Dolly Parton’s classic, ‘Hard Candy Christmas,’ which we all love,” she shared.

“It’s about getting through a tough holiday. I absolutely love that song, and it allowed me to write this.”

It’s OK to Cry at Christmastime!

Though plenty of people feel joy around the holidays, there’s also immense pressure to be happy even if you’re going through a hard time.

For the mother-of-two, who has been very open about her divorce, she decided to write “Merry Christmas (To the One I Used to Know)” after a good cry.

“The holidays come with a whole range of emotions. I’m going to be real with y’all, when I wrote this next song, I was crying my face off, which happens even at Christmastime, everyone,” she explained.

“I’d just put my kids to bed, and I was just going through it, having a really hard time and it’s been a really tough year for a lot of us.”

Isn’t that the truth!

Christmas Breakup Anthem

And, along with performing her emotional new song, Clarkson also performed her holiday breakup anthem “Christmas Isn’t Canceled (Just You).”

While plenty of people get engaged or fall in love over the holidays, this song is for the ones who get broken up with during the holidays.

“I was honestly a little nervous about sharing this one because it’s not your typical Christmas single. But it was the first song that I wrote for this album and I wrote it because a lot of things were taken from us over the last couple of years — people, relationships, jobs, etc. There were so many things taken,” she explained.

“But instead of looking at everything that’s gone wrong, we should be looking at all the things that have gone right. And that’s what my therapist tells me anyway so that’s who I’m singing to! But no matter what people try to take from you, nobody can cancel Christmas, y’all.”

So, if you’re going through it this holiday season, make sure to put on Kelly Clarkson’s Christmas album. You won’t be disappointed!
