Actress Rebel Wilson has documented her weight loss journey on social media for more than a year now, but she says those around her weren’t supportive of the transformation.
During a recent interview with BBC News, the Pitch Perfect star opened up about what her own team actually thought of her “year of health.”
Actress Rebel Wilson Embarked on Year-Long Health Journey
Rebel Wilson, 41, has managed to lose nearly 80 pounds during her remarkable fitness journey. After dubbing 2020 “The Year of Health,” she has shared her progress through social media. And it’s been quite the change! And while fans have become obsessed with staying up-to-date on the actress’ healthier lifestyle, it looks like not everyone was on board. It has to do with Rebel’s previous standing in Hollywood as the “funny fat girl.”
During her interview with BBC, the actress acknowledged that she was comfortable with her weight. The fitness journey was never about her size. She never had an issue with rocking the red carpet alongside other celebrities, despite being “double the size” of the other actresses.
Despite being comfortable in her own skin, Rebel knew it was time to reshape her relationship with food. It was less about confidence in her weight, and more about knowing that her eating habits were problematic.
“But I knew deep down inside, some of the emotional eating behavior I was doing was not healthy,” the actress told BBC. “Like, I did not need a tub of ice cream every night.”
Rebel goes on to admit, “That was me kind of numbing [my] emotions using food, which wasn’t the healthiest thing.”
That’s why, In 2020, the actress declared it “The Year of Health” and set herself a personal health challenge. She has shared her journey and physical transformation online. She lost more than 70 pounds, making for quite a fitness transformation.
Rebel’s Team Didn’t Want Her to Lose Weight
And while many have applauded Rebel for wanting to get healthy, her management team apparently wasn’t part of that. After all, she had made a career out of being the “funny fat girl” on the big screen.
“I got a lot of pushback from my own team actually, here in Hollywood, when I said ‘Okay, I’m going to do this year of health. I feel like I’m really going to physically transform and change my life,’” Rebel recounted during the interview.
“And they were like, ‘Why? Why would you want to do that?’” she continued. “Because I was earning millions of dollars being the funny fat girl and being that person.”
The actress admits that she has seen a lot of attention after feeling “invisible” in the past.
“I know what it’s like to be a woman who is essentially invisible to most people because of not being seen as traditionally beautiful or whatever,” she admitted to the outlet.
But don’t let Rebel’s weight loss fool you – she’s still not trying to fit that mold.
“It’s crazy to try to fit that,” she noted. “It’s just better to be the healthiest version.”
