Taylor Swift is truly one of us.
The 11-time Grammy-winning artist (and all-around superstar) has been watching the Olympics just like the rest of us over the past week and a half.
And, like the rest of us, she has been incredibly moved by gymnast Simone Biles’ decision to withdraw from multiple events in order to focus on her mental health.
When Simone decided to make her return to the Olympic competition and compete in the balance beam final, Taylor decided to make her feelings about the 24-year-old public.
It All Started With a Video
Prior to the start of the balance beam final on Tuesday, August 3, which was both Simone’s return and farewell to the Tokyo games, Taylor narrated a video about the gymnast for NBC.
In the moving video, Taylor’s song “This Is Me Trying” plays in the background as the 31-year-old calls Simone a “hero.”
“What do we want from our heroes? What do we expect from them? What do we need from them? What happens when they surprise us?” Taylor asks.
“When you have the attention of the world, everything you do takes on a bigger meaning. It can be a heavy burden. It can be a chance to change everything.”
She continues, “Throughout the last week, her voice has been as significant as her talents. Her honesty as beautiful as the perfection that had long been her signature. But don’t you see? It still is. She is perfectly human. And that’s what makes it so easy to call her a hero.”
Simone Couldn’t Believe It
Needless to say, Simone was very moved by Taylor’s narration and decided to thank the singer on Twitter.
“I’m crying 🥺🤍 how special. I love you @taylorswift13,” she wrote.
Taylor then responded to Simone, “I cried watching YOU. I feel so lucky to have gotten to watch you all these years, but this week was a lesson in emotional intelligence and resilience. We all learned from you. Thank you.”
I’m not crying, you’re crying.
The Gymnast Won a Bronze
Simone’s return to the balance beam earned her a bronze medal. She finished just behind two Chinese gymnasts, Guan Chenchen and Tang Xijing.
As many know, Simone decided to pull out of her other individual events due to her suffering mental health, which was causing her to have a case of the “twisties.”
The “twisties” is a gymnastics term for a condition that causes gymnasts to lose their awareness in the air. It can be very dangerous and cause serious injuries if not taken seriously.
Simone Suffered Another Loss During the Olympics
And, along with struggling with her mental health, Simone also revealed she lost her aunt on her father’s side unexpectedly this week.
“That was another one, I was like, ‘Oh my God. This week needs to be over,’” her coach, Cecile Canqueteau-Landi said according to People.
“I asked her what do you need. And she said, ‘I just need some time.’ I said, ‘You call me, text me if you need anything I’ll be here. Whatever that is.’ She called her parents. She said, ‘There’s nothing I can do from over here. So I’m just going to finish my week and when I get home we’ll deal with it.’”
Go enjoy your well-deserved time off, Simone. Taylor’s proud of you and we are proud of you!
