When you think about famous celebs, you probably assume they all live in lavish LA homes. After all, that is where all the magic of the entertainment industry happens! Not only that, but Hollywood is certainly the place to be seen dining at upscale restaurants or partying at the hottest LA nightclubs.

Surprisingly, though, many of the biggest stars on the planet prefer to live elsewhere.

While LA is certainly the hub of the entertainment industry, there are plenty of famous folks who have put down roots in other parts of the country. Whether it’s because they want to stay out of the spotlight during their downtime or because they just really love their hometowns, these celebs are happily living far from Hollywood.

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton – Tishomingo, Oklahoma

Gwen Stefani might have been born in Orange County, but these days she’s kicking back in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. That’s because hubby Blake Shelton already owned a ranch in the Sooner State, where he is originally from. Don’t be fooled by the term “ranch” or the location, though. It’s still an idyllic mansion with grand pillars and perfectly manicured gardens, sitting on 1,300 acres!

Elijah Wood – Austin, Texas

Where does a quirky hobbit of the Shire go when he needs an escape from the paparazzi? Apparently, the hip city of Austin, Texas!

For a while, Elijah Wood was living in Santa Monica, California, but in 2013 he decided to pack up his belongings and head for the Lone Star State. He sold the Spanish-style Santa Monica spot for $1.75 million and used that money to purchase a Victorian mansion in Austin. The beautiful home was built in 1890 and offers plenty of historical touches combined with modern updates. He has since sold that home as well, but you can check out pictures here.

Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart – Jackson, Wyoming

Harrison Ford is a notoriously private actor, keeping his personal life pretty guarded. However, we do know that he has lived on an 800-acre ranch in Jackson, Wyoming since the 1980s. When he married actress Calista Flockhart, she moved to the ranch with him.

He’s a dedicated environmental activist, so it’s not really a surprise that he has donated a series of easements, making up half his ranch, as a nature reserve. Ford is also a licensed pilot and often assists emergency services on rescue missions in Wyoming.

Julia Roberts – Taos, New Mexico

Julia Roberts is living quite a peaceful, stress-free life with her husband and their three children. That’s because she’s owned a sprawling ranch in Taos, New Mexico since the 1990s. The ranch is where she and husband Danny tied the knot in 2002, and it’s apparently where Roberts feels most like herself.

“It’s peaceful, and it’s a relief,” the actress once told Oprah Winfrey. “I always say you can’t be in a bad mood here. I don’t know if it’s New Mexico or just the mountains, but you can’t be silly in a negative way. You can be silly in a fun, whimsical way, but the petty, trite things that make you go, “Oh, God, it’s not the right size” or “Why is this happening like this?” – that kind of stuff doesn’t exist so much here. Everything is kind of clear.”

Shawn Mendes – Toronto, Canada

Although Shawn Mendes has quite the following here in the states, this singer was actually born in Pickering, Canada. Mendes has since moved to the city of Toronto, which is only about an hour away from where he grew up.

Unlike many of the other stars on this list, his home in Toronto isn’t some massive mansion or sprawling estate. Instead, Mendes owns a condo.

Meryl Streep – Salisbury, Connecticut

Though Hollywood has awarded her numerous awards, Meryl Streep lives far away from the hustle and bustle of it. Originally growing up in New Jersey, Streep is an East Coaster through and through. Along with her husband, sculptor Don Gummer, Streep and their children lived in a private estate in Connecticut. While she and her husband purchased a mansion in Brentwood, Los Angeles in 1990, they eventually moved back to Connecticut for good.

Bill Murray – Charleston, South Carolina

There have been plenty of reported sightings of Bill Murray in Charleston over the years, so it probably isn’t surprising that he does, in fact, live in the South Carolina city. In fact, he’s been known to crash parties, weddings, photoshoots, and even random games of kickball.

The legendary actor is also part-owner of the Charleston Riverdogs, a minor league baseball team, and fans get to take plenty of selfies with Murray at games.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds – Pound Ridge, New York

Although Blake Lively wasn’t much of a fan of her Gossip Girl character Serena van der Woodsen, she’s not too far off from that fictional “It Girl of Manhattan” – at least in terms of location. She and hubby Ryan Reynolds live in the upscale town of Pound Ridge, New York. The colonial mansion was built in 1860 and boasts seven bedrooms within its 9,000 square feet of living space. They had been living in a three-bedroom home in Bedford, but I guess they wanted extra space for their three children.

Jeff Daniels – Chelsea, Michigan

Multi-award-winning actor Jeff Daniels has spent decades working on stage and on screen, but he doesn’t live anywhere near Broadway or Hollywood. Instead, he prefers living in his hometown of Chelsea, Michigan. He married his college sweetheart, and he’s been living in Chelsea since he moved back in 1986.

In an effort to give back to his community, Daniels founded the Purple Rose Theatre Company. It provides resources for training actors, playwrights, and more. The not-for-profit organization also offers an apprenticeship program for young artists.

Eminem – Detroit, Michigan

I bet literally no one is shocked to learn that Eminem lives in Detroit, Michigan. Although the rapper was born in Missouri, he grew up in Michigan. A lot of his music details his upbringing and early life in Detroit, which was also chronicled in the semi-autobiographical movie 8 Mile.

Now that he’s a star, he still resides in Detroit, albeit in nicer digs. He owns a nearly 9,000-square-foot mansion that he purchased in 2000.

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban – Leipers Fork, Tennessee

Nicole Kidman and Kieth Urban own a few properties across various locations, including in Australia, where Kidman is from. However, they spend a lot of time in Leipers Fork, Tennessee. This makes plenty of sense, considering Urban is an award-winning country music star. It’s close enough to Nashville, which is basically the epicenter for country music.

However, Leipers Fork is a small and charming town with picturesque surroundings. Sounds like the perfect place to get away from the hectic life of being a celeb!

John Travolta – Ocala, Florida

John Travolta lives in Ocala, Florida, but his home is a little more unique than any regular ol’ mansion. That’s because Travolta lives in a private community called Jumbolair Aviation and Equestrian Estates. This exclusive fly-in community has its own private runway, and it’s the largest private paved airfield in the United States.

Every one of the homes has its own taxiway which leads to the runway, and all those homes also have their own hangars. Travolta is an aviation enthusiast and a private pilot, after all.

Dave Chappelle – Yellow Springs, Ohio

While Yellow Springs, Ohio might sound like an odd place for a celebrity to put down roots, comedian and actor Dave Chappelle has a long history with the town. When he was growing up, he spent summers with his dad in Ohio. Chapelle’s father was a professor and the dean of students at Antioch College in Yellow Springs.

Knowing that, it makes much more sense why Chappelle chose this tiny town as his Hollywood hideaway. He and his wife live on a 65-acre farm there.

Tina Turner – Küsnacht, Switzerland

The Queen of Rock n Roll definitely doesn’t live in Hollywood, or even anywhere close. This Tennessee-born singer moved to Switzerland in 1995 and never looked back. After a 27-year relationship with German music exec Erwin Bach, the two of them married in Switzerland in 2013. That was the same year that Turner relinquished her U.S. citizenship in favor of becoming a citizen of Switzerland.

I think it’s safe to assume she plans on staying there and has no plans of moving back to the U.S.!

Jon Bon Jovi – Palm Beach, Florida

Frontman Jon Bon Jovi was born in New Jersey and called it home for nearly sixty years. He only recently left the state when he sold his custom-built, French chateau-inspired mansion in Middletown, NJ. I guess he decided it was time to move now that his kids are grown.

Bon Jovi left his Jersey home for Palm Beach, Florida, where he purchased an opulent oceanfront mansion for $43 million.
