A New Year’s Playlist for the Zodiac!

We can’t toast the New Year without music! I created a New Years playlist for the zodiac. Some of the songs are party anthems. Some of them are soulful ballads. Read on to find out which song your sign is paired with.

Don’t forget to check your moon and rising signs as well as your sun signs. You can check your birth chart here!

Happy New Year!

Aries – Firework

Written and performed by Katy Perry. Co-written by Mikkel S. Eriksen, Tor Erik Hermansen, Sandy Wilhelm, Ester Dean.

Want to hear a little secret about Aries? Not only are they the biggest crybabies in the entire zodiac, but they are also perpetual optimists – and they are not afraid to let their colors burst. Even when they feel like a plastic bag drifting through the wind, they can still manage to be a firework. If they feel less than fiery, they can listen to this song to remind themselves of what they are worth. Besides, what is New Year’s Eve without fireworks?

Taurus – Auld Lang Syne

Written by Robert Burns. Performed by Celtic Woman.

Taureans get paired with the most famous New Year’s song of all time! As you listen to the time-honored lyrics and sweet, simple melody, you can imagine the Homemaker of the zodiac sharing a cup of kindness with the ones who matter most to them. Maybe that cup holds hot cocoa, mulled wine, or perhaps something stronger. Whatever the drink is, you know Taureans will go out of their way to make you feel warm and cozy.

Gemini – New Attitude

Written by Jon Gillutin, Bunny Hall, and Sharon Robinson. Performed by Patti LaBelle.

This mutable air sign will fly into 2023 with a new attitude. Sometimes Gemini runs hot and cold, and sometimes they run into overload. If anyone understands extremes, it is Gemini. This song, sung by the incomparable Gemini Patti LaBelle, will get the air signs dancing on their feet while letting them embrace their carefree attitude. They are just as optimistic as Aries, so you know they will love the lyrics, “I’m feeling good from my hat to my shoe / know where I am going and I know what to do / I’ve tidied up my point of view.”

Cancer – Kiss Me

Written by Sixpence None The Richer

This song is going to unlock so many memories for Generation X and Millennials. The lyrics of this song may put you more in mind of summer. But no New Year’s Eve playlist is complete without a song about kissing. Cancerians are known to be compassionate and devoted, so you know they will be eager to kiss their loved one when the clock strikes 12! Since they are ruled by the moon, they will love the lyrics, “strike up the band and make the fireflies dance / silver moon’s sparkling.”

Leo – Raise Your Glass

Written and performed by Pink. Co-written by Max Martin and Johan Schuster.

Everyone knows that the party doesn’t start until Leo arrives. They are like Kesha that way. So I had to pair them with one of the greatest party anthems of all time. The fixed fire sign will love letting loose to this song and screaming the lyrics at the top of their lungs while toasting to the new year. Though it’s safe to say that Leo would get fancy as well as dancy. The great thing about Leos is that they bring the party with them wherever they go, so lyrics like “you can choose to let it go, we can always, we can always party on our own” will resonate with them.

Virgo – I Can’t Be Bothered

Written by Travis Howard. Performed by Miranda Lambert.

Virgos are the most pragmatic and analytical signs in the zodiac. So it stands to reason that they are the sign most likely to kick the dust of 2022 off their heels. At first listen, this song may not sound like a New Year’s Eve song. But the lyric “I can’t be bothered to miss you anymore, it’s month twelve, day thirty-one, and hour twenty-four,” will convince you otherwise. The mutable earth sign can listen to this song and go into 2023 completely unbothered.

Libra – What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?

Written by Frank Loesser. Performed by Ella Fitzgerald.

Libra is ruled by Venus, the planet named for the Greek Goddess of love. So naturally, I had to pair them with the most romantic song on this list. This song has become one of our culture’s most beloved holiday songs through the years. And it is not hard to imagine the romantic and inquisitive air sign asking the object of their affection this question. They will love the sentimental lyrics like “And the couples we know are fondly kissing, will I be with you or will I be among the missing?”

Scorpio – It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)

Written and performed by R.E.M.

This is the perfect song for Scorpio to ring in the New Year. This song speaks to Scorpio’s broody yet adventurous nature. In a way, our world ends every New Year’s Eve and is reborn every New Year’s Day. Maybe that’s why the sentiment of feeling fine at the end of the world resonates so well with the fixed water sign. They are gloomy enough to realize that things are changing, but they are adventurous to be somewhat hopeful about what’s to come.

Sagittarius – Same Old Lang Syne

Written and performed by Dan Fogelberg

Some may say this is a Christmas song because it takes place on Christmas Eve, but it references “Auld Lang Syne,” so it’s on the New Year’s playlist. Sagittarius often gets associated with high-energy party songs. But for this playlist, I wanted to pick a song that speaks more to their introspective character. In this song, the narrator reflects on their own life and what could have been as they catch up with an old lover. The reflective fire sign will love the lyrics, “we drank a toast to innocence we drank a toast to now and tried to reach beyond the emptiness but neither one knew how.”

Capricorn – If We Make It Through December

Written and performed by Merle Haggard.

Capricorn gets paired with a thoughtful ballad on this playlist. Capricorn season starts at the tail end of December, but that is not the only reason I paired this tune with the cardinal sign. This introspective song about a man looking for work during Christmas speaks to Capricorn’s hardworking nature and accountability. It will allow the earth sign to greet 2023 with realism as well as hope.

Aquarius – Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home)

Written and Performed by Elle King. Co-written by Martin Johnson and co-performed by Miranda Lambert.

Miranda Lambert has two songs on this list! Aquarians often get labeled as outsiders. But not many people realize that they have a rebellious party side to them. They enjoy a good night of revelry, which is why this is the perfect New Year’s Eve song for them. They will love screaming this song at the top of their lungs while partying it up all night with a group of close friends they’d just met.

Pisces – 1999

Written and performed by Prince.

Prince may be a Gemini, but I think he was channeling his Pisces moon when he wrote this song. I paired Pisces with this song for a couple of reasons. Pisces are known to be quite sentimental, so they will adore a song that encourages them to party like they did more than 20 years ago. Pisces are also known to be the biggest dreamers in the zodiac, so they will love the lyrics “I was dreamin’ when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray.”

Ophiuchus – My Funny Valentine

Written by Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart. Performed by Ella Fitzgerald.

This is definitely not a New Year’s Eve song, and Ophiuchus is definitely not a real sign! At least they got the second Ella Fitzgerald song on the playlist.
