Adele’s not apologizing for being who she is.
The singer, who is releasing her fourth studio album later this week, opened up to Oprah Winfrey during her Adele One Night Only special about the attention she’s received for losing weight over the past few years.
While she understands people’s fascination with her changing body, she’s doesn’t feel the need to justify why she’s lost weight.
The “Hello” singer explained her body has been a topic of conversation ever since she broke out with her debut album, 19, over a decade ago.
“I’m not shocked or even fazed by it because my body has been objectified my entire career. I’m either too big or too small; I’m either hot or I’m not,” she told Oprah.
But, while her weight loss garnered a lot of positive comments, other fans felt betrayed by her changing body. Some people even criticized her for not being “body positive,” a critique Adele does not agree with.
“I was body positive then and I’m body positive now. It’s not my job to validate how people feel about their bodies.”
“I feel bad if anyone feels horrible about themselves but that’s not my job. I’m trying to sort my own life out. I can’t add another worry.”
While Adele has revealed she lost around 100 pounds over the last few years, she actually didn’t set out to lose a bunch of weight.
In fact, Adele began hitting the gym in order to deal with the anxiety she was feeling due to her divorce.
“I had the most terrifying anxiety attacks after I left my marriage. They paralyzed me completely, and made me so confused because I wouldn’t be able to have any control over my body,” she shared.
“That really contributed towards me getting my mind right. It became my time. Having these sort of pins in my day helped me keep myself together.”
Adele and her ex-husband, Simon Konecki, publicly split in September 2019, but it wasn’t an easy decision for the singer.
As someone who grew up in a broken home, she was determined to keep her family together.
But, after just a couple of years of marriage, she realized she was no longer happy in her relationship.
“I just said it in front of three of my friends, I was like, ‘I’m really not happy. I’m not living, I’m just plodding along,’” she explained.
“It was when I admitted to my own friends, who thought I was really happy, that actually I’m really unhappy, and they were all aghast.”
Despite going through ups and downs, Adele is in a much happier and healthier place and is ready to put out some new tunes.
