By now, it’s safe to assume you’ve seen Billie Eilish’s new look.
The photos of Eilish from British Vogue magazine have nearly broken the internet at this point. In fact, the singer has once again made history, as she shattered her own record on Instagram.
The talented 19-year-old singer-songwriter has swapped her signature two-tone black and neon green locks for something a little different. Not to mention, she dropped the baggy wardrobe as she leaned all the way into a more “grown-up” image.
We’ve seen the pop sweetheart transformation before: Miley Cyrus in Vanity Fair in 2008; Christina Aguilera on the cover of Rolling Stone in 2000; and Britney Spears famously rocked the world with the Rolling Stone cover in 1999. But Billie Eilish seems keenly aware of the power dynamics involved in revamping her image.
“It’s all about what makes you feel good.”
Billie Eilish has traded her baggy clothes for glamorous lingerie in British Vogue. And she’s here to say, “It’s all about what makes you feel good.”
Eliish first debuted her new blonde locks last month. I feel sorry for whatever hairstylist had to remove layers of black hair dye to achieve the new lighter color, but it looks so good.
She was apparently keeping those locks under lock and key. During a Q&A sesh on Instagram, she answered plenty of fan questions about her new hair — including how long it took and why she was hiding it. She revealed that it took around six weeks to accomplish, so clearly she hid it because it started off looking like this:
The lengthy process to get that shade of blonde had led some to speculate that the pop star was actually wearing a wig when she performed at the Grammys this year. Eilish later confirmed that it was a wig–but nobody was ready for the bombshell looks she was about to drop in the UK edition of Vogue.
Eilish Broke Records on Social Media With Her New Look
Eilish herself shared the photos on her Insta account, and she definitely took social media by storm.
One of the photos she posted became the most liked photo on the app. That means she broke her own record, becoming the only person to have six posts in the top 20 most-liked Instagram pictures in history.
The photo also picked up more than a million likes in just five minutes. It’s the fastest any image has ever gotten that many likes in the history of the platform.
Just one look at the photos, and it’s easy to see why. The bold photoshoot features Eilish in a series of vintage, pin-up-esque outfits that are a clear departure from her signature baggy wardrobe.
The shoot, styled by Dena Giannini, was Eilish’s idea. And she’s revealing herself on her own terms, in a way that makes her feel good.
In one image, she’s wearing a trench coat and corset by Burberry — and fans will notice she’s showing off a tattoo she got last year that she previously said fans would never see. In other photos, she’s wearing a corset dress from Alexander McQueen, latex gloves, and a custom catsuit and corset by Mugler.
“I’ve literally never done anything in this realm at all,” Eilish told Vogue for the issue.
While this is clearly a departure from her once-signature silhouette that hid her figure, don’t think she’s changed her mind concerning the unfair standards women are often held to in the entertainment industry–and beyond.
“My thing is that I can do whatever I want,” she said. “It’s all about what makes you feel good.”
She also added, “showing your body and showing your skin — or not — should not take away any respect from you.”
