The MAMAs were first established in 2008 to celebrate the artists who put out the most popular contemporary music each year in Africa. Host cities have included Abuja and Lagos in Nigeria; Nairobi, Kenya; and Durban and Johannesburg in South Africa. The 2021 awards will be held in Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda.

Past recipients of MAMAs include artists such as Yemi Alade, Wizkid, P-Square, Sarkodie, 2Face, Mo’Cheddah, Amani, Seether, and many more. The MAMAs also recognize achievements outside of the music world, with Lupita Nyong’o and Trevor Noah each winning “Personality of the Year” in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

DJ Khaled Following in Footsteps of Other Legends

Past hosts of the MAMAs include Eve, Wyclef Jean, Anthony Anderson and Marlon Wayans. Khaled’s turn will of course look a little different, considering he will take on hosting duties via livestream from his Miami home. Despite the road bumps, Khaled seems stoked about the event.

“MTV has always been a great partner, so I jumped at the opportunity to host this year’s MAMAs,” he said. ” I can’t wait to celebrate the incredible music that comes out of Africa, which has inspired me throughout my career.”

“We are thrilled to have DJ Khaled as our international host for MAMA Kampala 2021,” said Monde Twala, senior VP at ViacomCBS Networks Africa in a statement. “With his global success achievement and over 22 million followers on social media, he will inspire youth across the continent and attract an even bigger international audience to the virtual event.”

Bruce Gillmer, president of music, programming and events for ViacomCBS Media Networks, added, “Africa is home to some of the world’s most dynamic talent, and we’re excited to spotlight these artists as the MAMAs broadcast in 180 countries for the first time in MTV history.”

Other cohosts and stars will help Khaled to emcee the event, which has 20 awards to hand out. So far, nominees for 16 award categories have been announced for 2021.
