All the rumors are true: Lizzo and Cardi B’s latest collaboration is a fun, late-summer jam that will have you dancing your pants off.

While the song is all about brushing off the haters, Lizzo’s had a difficult time emotionally when it comes to putting herself back in the spotlight. Luckily, her BFF Cardi B was there to show support during this tough week.

‘Rumors’

It hasn’t even been a week since Lizzo and Cardi dropped their new collaboration track, “Rumors,” and it’s already got people talking like crazy. 33-year-old Lizzo hasn’t put out a new song in a while, and releasing this track on August 13 put her right back where she left off in the spotlight.

In the track, Lizzo directly addresses the negativity that’s surrounded her since her rapid rise to fame in 2019, which was ushered along by the mainstream attention toward her sleeper hit, “Truth Hurts.” Her talent as a singer, rapper, and flutist is undeniable, but internet trolls love to hate on those who don’t fit a mainstream mold. Lizzo has had to deal with a lot of that negativity throughout her career.

But Lizzo is great at combating the negative energy by calling it out, teasing it, and flipping it on its head for a song that says, “Okay, I hear you. Now, can we talk about something more interesting?”

A pregnant Cardi B joins Lizzo for the song and music video, and I absolutely love these two together. Lizzo demonstrates her empowerment through humor, incredible vocal riffs, and a sense of optimism. Cardi B is also hilariously blunt in her lyrics, though she comes at the haters and trolls with a more fiery energy that complements Lizzo’s essence well.

After the music video dropped, unsurprisingly, the exact trolls Lizzo and Cardi B address in “Rumors” came out in full force to attack the project.

As much as Lizzo has tried to steer clear of haters by limiting her social media usage and focusing on herself, I imagine it’s difficult to drop a song that racks up over 12 million views in a few days and not be tempted to read a few of the comments.

Lizzo took to Instagram Live on Sunday, sobbing over the sadness she felt toward some of the responses toward the new track and video.

“Sometimes I feel like the world just don’t love me back,” she said. “It’s like, it doesn’t matter how much positive energy you put into the world. You’re still going to have people who have something mean to say about you.”

Cardi B retweeted the video of Lizzo, adding, “When you stand up for yourself they claim your [sic] problematic & sensitive. When you don’t they tear you apart until you crying like this. Whether you skinny, big, plastic, they going to always try to put their insecurities on you. Remember these are nerds looking at the popular table.”

Lizzo also shared a message that Missy Elliot shared with her, which read, “Once every few decades, someone breaks the mold. And you are one of those people. Continue to shine and be blessed through your next journey.”

Lizzo has always worn her heart on her sleeve, and her sensitivity makes her music all the more relatable and inspiring. Now that she’s gotten the rumors out of the way, we can’t wait to see what she’s got waiting for us next!
