Sony’s coming in hot for 2022 and beyond with their slate of next-gen titles. The PlayStation has developed a reputation as the console you want to have if you like tightly-plotted, cinematic single-player experiences. Sony’s doubling down on that image, as you can see with the slew of awesome new games revealed in their recent PlayStation Showcase.
Let’s take a look at some of the coolest reveals from the showcase and determine which one is going to generate the most hype!
6. Project Eve
Project Eve looks like a cross between Bayonetta and Nier: Automata, and that’s good company to be in. The game stars the titular Eve, a talented warrior who slices and dices her way through the ruins of a post-apocalyptic Earth. The game seems to be pretty self-aware about its silly tropes, and, if gameplay videos are any indication, is going to be a really good time.
5. Guardians of the Galaxy
Guardians of the Galaxy (the game, not the movie) is set to put players in the role of the title group of superheroes as they try to save the world from a dangerous group of interstellar religious zealots. This title will be single-player only, unlike the Crystal Dynamics Avengers game that was released last year with a focus on being a live-service multiplayer title.
Guardians looks like a fun romp through Marvel’s cosmic mythos, and I’m excited to get my hands on it. This one has a solid release date: it hits on October 26, 2021.
Not much is known about the upcoming Wolverine title, but here’s what we do know. The game is being made by Insomniac, Sony’s busiest in-house studio. It’ll star everyone’s favorite mutant, of course, and it’s expected to be a cinematic single-player experience like Spider-Man. The game will also be a PS5 exclusive.
Beyond that, everything is speculation. Given Insomniac’s pedigree of making incredible superhero games, I’m willing to bet this game is going to be worth watching in the lead-up to its release.
3. Knights of the Old Republic
That’s right, the legendary Knights of the Old Republic is getting a remake, and it’s a PS5 exclusive. Some longtime fans of the series are a bit frustrated by that exclusivity, given that the Star Wars-themed RPG was originally an Xbox exclusive when it was released way back in 2003.
The new game is being developed by Aspyr, a studio previously known for making mobile phone ports of other games.
2. God of War Ragnarok
The legendary series got an incredible revival on PS4 in 2018 with the release of the aptly-titled God of War. The sequel sees Kratos and his son Atreus making their way through a Norse-mythology-inspired world once again, this time battling major deities like Thor along the way. Will Kratos cause Ragnarok, or avert it? I’m dying to find out, and can’t wait to sink my teeth into this expansive adventure once again.
1. Spider-Man 2
Easily the biggest reveal of the event was the cinematic trailer for the sequel to the incredible 2018 PS4 exclusive, Spider-Man. The open-world title perfectly captures everything about the fantasy of playing as Spider-Man and brings New York to life in stunning detail.
Fans of the comics are delighted to see that the trailer indicates Miles Morales will be returning in the sequel. Additionally, longtime Spider-Man villain Venom is set to finally appear in this title. Fans are positively buzzing for this one. It’ll release sometime in 2023, and it can’t come soon enough!
