We all know the basics of Hogwarts: the Sorting Hat puts students into one of four houses based on their values and traits. But in Divergent, the characters choose a faction. However, some fail out of initiation and end up as a “factionless” person. I was revisiting the Divergent trilogy and got to thinking about how would the Harry Potter characters handle the factions.

For those who haven’t read the books or watched the movies in a while: Abnegation is for the selfless, Dauntless for the brave, Candor for the honest, Erudite for the intellectual, and Amity for the peaceful.

Newt Scamander: Amity

Newt is so adorable and complex that I couldn’t resist placing him first. This precious cinnamon roll belongs in the most peaceful, gentle faction. However, Newt would have no doubt been born in Dauntless because of his family.

While he is brave, he just wants to live a life surrounded by his magical creatures. If he hadn’t been dragged into the battle between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, he would have been happy and lived a peaceful life. I think he would have left Dauntless for Amity in a heartbeat.

Voldemort: Erudite

For some reason, I think Tom Riddle would have been born in Candor. He wasn’t truthful, but I think that’s precisely why he would’ve chosen another faction at the Choosing Ceremony. But let’s be honest, he was pretty candid once he was known as Voldemort.

At the Choosing Ceremony, there’s no doubt in my mind Voldemort would have gone with Erudite. Dauntless might have called to him a bit, but all in all, he’s always searching for something. Like Jeanine Matthews, he wanted to be the head honcho no matter what.

Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody: Dauntless

We barely know anything about Mad-Eye from before his appearance in the books. But he does seem to have been one of the bravest characters from the beginning. So, I think he would have been born in Dauntless.

At his Choosing Ceremony, I can see him debating between Candor, Erudite, and Dauntless. In his testing, I think he would have ended up Divergent. However, in the end, he goes with Dauntless because he wants and needs to be brave.

Severus Snape: Erudite

With Snape, he was also truthful when talking to Lily. But once they got to Hogwarts and Lily caught James’s attention, he started lying and dabbling in dark magic. When he finally lost her, all of his attention went to school and revenge.

I think he may have been born in Candor but ultimately chose to leave for Erudite. Throughout the series, we see him lying left and right, so of course, he wouldn’t fit into Candor. But he is smart enough to lie to Voldemort, so he’d thrive in Erudite.

Luna Lovegood: Amity

There’s no doubt in my mind Luna is the perfect person for Amity. She was raised as a free spirit and chose to embrace that instead of conforming to everyone else’s expectations. Even as she’s being bullied, she actively forgives them instead of stooping to their level.

So, if she had been in the Divergent series, she would have been in Amity from the day she was born. I also don’t think she would’ve ever considered leaving the faction. But, plot twist, Luna would be Divergent with Dauntless and Abnegation being high up with Amity.

Albus Dumbledore: Erudite

From what we’ve seen in the Fantastic Beasts movies, Dumbledore dabbled in defensive spells and dark magic in his youth. For that reason alone, I think he would have been raised in Dauntless with his brother Aberforth.

But he also got out of that and turned over a new leaf – aside from raising Harry like a pig for slaughter – so I think he’d have chosen Erudite at his Choosing Ceremony. He’s shown he’s intellectual but also sneaky like Jeanine Matthews.

Draco Malfoy: Amity

Before you start protesting, let me explain why Draco would choose Amity. Yes, he was raised to be a child warrior by his father (despite his mother’s pleas to keep him out of it). But what does Draco really want at the end of the series?

Draco just wants to live his life in peace, away from all the fighting. So, despite his life leading up to the Battle of Hogwarts, I think Draco would end up choosing Amity to get away from everything he’s been taught. He’d find happiness there.

Dobby: Abnegation

Dobby is a house elf, a creature that was literally born to serve witches and wizards in the wizarding world. So, before he ever got to choose what to do with his life, he always put his own safety and care aside to serve others, making me believe he was born in Abnegation.

At the Choosing Ceremony, he would choose Abnegation because the only thing he truly wants is to help others get the same freedom he got in the second book. Heck, he literally gave his life to save Harry, Ron, Hermione, Luna, Ollivander, and Griphook. I still cry thinking about it.

Molly Weasley: Dauntless

Before I get into why Molly would have chosen Dauntless, let’s talk about where she would have lived before the Choosing Ceremony. From what little we know of her family, the Prewetts, we know they were brave and courageous. So, I think Molly would have been born in Dauntless.

Molly, throughout the books, may have put her family (and Harry sometimes) first in nearly all instances. But while that may seem to fit Abnegation, she’s much more courageous than selfless. And we all saw her in the Battle facing down Bellatrix; she’s Dauntless through and through.

Fred and George Weasley: Amity

Because their mom chose Dauntless, it’s going to lead to all seven of her children being born Dauntless. Before Fred and George, though, let me place their older siblings. Bill and Charlie would have chosen to stay in Dauntless while Percy went to Erudite.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get into why Fred and George both would have chosen Amity. While Amity is the peaceful faction, they would have been happier there. They didn’t feel like they could chase their prankster ways in Dauntless, but Amity would gladly accept them.

Ginny Weasley: Dauntless

We’ve already covered that Molly’s children would have been born Dauntless; unlike Fred and George, though, Ginny would feel right at home. Book Ginny (because there is quite a big difference in the movies’ portrayal) is a fiery girl who would stare down evil any day.

Ginny takes after Molly in many ways, so she’d never hesitate when choosing Dauntless. She doesn’t strive to be anything but herself, and that takes a lot of courage to do. She’s also one of the best fighters from the book, hands down.

Minerva McGonagall: Erudite

Minerva might be one of the best witches in the Harry Potter series, but she wouldn’t be that if she wasn’t one of the brightest in her generation. Before Hermione, there was McGonagall. So, I think she would choose Erudite in the Choosing Ceremony.

But where did she live before the ceremony? While we don’t know much about Minerva and her family before the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, we do know she was a good student. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be a professor. So, she would have been born in Erudite.

Ron Weasley: Abnegation

As with the rest of his siblings, Ron would have been born into Dauntless. And that’s obvious with how much he tries in Defense Against the Dark Arts. He always wants to help his friends, even if it means disappearing and not seeing his family for months.

However, despite him being brave, his actions in the series show that he’s more selfless than heroic. He cares about people too much – remember when he sacrificed himself in giant wizard’s chess so Harry could get through?

Hermione Granger: Erudite

She was literally called the “brightest witch of her age.” Is there any doubt Hermione would choose Erudite? With the constant debate about her being wrongly sorted into Gryffindor instead of Ravenclaw, we can all agree that if she had the choice, she’d go for the “intellectual” group.

But which faction would she have been in before the Choosing Ceremony? Since her parents are dentists, I’m pretty sure they would have been Erudite because that’s a lot of science and school. So, Hermione would have been in Erudite her whole life.

Harry Potter: Abnegation

From the very moment he set foot in Hogwarts, Harry was trained as a child soldier meant to destroy the big bad evil in the wizarding world. While I think he would have been born into Dauntless, Harry would have chosen to go to Abnegation.

He’s proven to be selfless in many instances. The best example is when he sacrificed himself to try to protect everyone fighting at Hogwarts. He didn’t have to, but he did anyway. That’s exactly what an Abnegation initiate would do.
