Have you heard about the surprise concert film from Billie Eilish? It’s offically about to drop.
As of September 3, Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles will be streaming globally and exclusively on Disney+. If the official trailer is any indication of what’s to come, it’s going to be intimate, sentimental, and utterly magical.
Here’s what we can expect.
It Was Filmed in An Iconic Hollywood Spot
As Eilish puts it, this “cinematic concert experience” is more than just a performance, “it’s a story” set in a surreal version of L.A. She’s expanding her second album into a world of its own whilst paying tribute to Old Hollywood. And the setting is a pretty big deal.
Center stage at L.A.’s Hollywood Bowl amphitheater, the singer/songwriter performs every track from Happier Than Ever sequentially, and she’s in top-notch company.
Her brother, Finneas, the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and globally renowned Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo all come along for the ride.
We’re also being introduced to an exciting new side of the popstar.
Billie Will Be Unveiling A New Look… Sort Of
Directed by Robert Rodriguez, Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles is taking Billie Eilish to familiar places from her childhood, but also somewhere she’s never been.
Rodriquez is co-directing with Oscar-winning animator/director Patrick Osborne. And yes, there are going to be fantastical animated elements involved.
The main animated feature worth noting is there will be an animated version of Billie Eilish taking us on much of this musical journey. This cartoon Billie driving around L.A. will undoubtedly become the moody and edgy Disney princess we never knew we always needed.
According to the Grammy-winning songstress, the animated elements play with idealized versions “we all have of ourselves” and are interwoven with a “beautiful version of old Hollywood” and the live performances.
Watch Billie undergo her Disney transformation in the teaser.
There’s a Perk for Disney+ Subscribers
Per Rolling Stone, the film is free to watch. However, Disney+ subscribers will have the luxury of watching Happier Than Ever online in both Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos immersive audio. The idea is to give a more theater-type, surround sound-like experience, the way this concert film was intended to be enjoyed.
If you want to watch it but lack Disney+, there are other options out there. For instance, Amazon offers six months of Disney+ free through Amazon Music Unlimited.
Some Spoilers and Need to Know Deets
Rated TV-14, Billie Eilish’s Disney debut will run one hour and five minutes. Per the release, the film will take viewers “on a dreamlike journey through Billie’s hometown of Los Angeles and its most iconic backdrops.” And Eilish says it’s a film about fantasies, namely, her own.
Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry was an intimate look at the making of her first album, but this film’s aim is more about the second album itself.
This time around, the focus will be more on the music and the visual stories accompanying each song. It’s said to be an artistic encapsulation of what the songs, L.A., and music means to Eilish.
Of the highly anticipated film, Billie says, “To be able to present my album in this way and dedicate it to the city that I love and grew up in is so exciting to me. I hope you love it.”
