Downton Abbey fans are getting a very special present this holiday season: another visit to Lord and Lady Grantham’s Yorkshire country estate.

That’s right! There will be a sequel movie, tentatively titled Downton Abbey 2, and it is set to release at the end of 2021.

Everything We Know About Downton Abbey 2

It took a few years, but after Downton Abbey went off the air in 2016, fans of the period drama were treated to a feature-length film. The movie again revolved around the Crawley family, plus the many maids, footmen, kitchen staff, and other folks who keep the estate running. That movie involved a royal visit to the stately home, with the King and Queen visiting the Crawley family’s home in the Yorkshire countryside.

Now, a sequel to the 2019 film is happening, and it’s coming sooner than fans could have imagined. Focus Feature Films has confirmed that the film will hit theaters in December 2021.

Focus also revealed that the entire Downton cast is on board, but it’s probably safe to assume this vague announcement means the entire cast of the first movie–not the whole series to date! The first movie did have a few notable absences, such as Lady Rosamund, played by Samantha Bond.

We can likely expect Maggie Smith, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Michelle Dockery, Joanne Froggatt, Matthew Goode, Allen Leech, and more of the beloved actors who have been with the franchise since the beginning. Hugh Bonneville himself already posted that it’s “Good to be back.” I think fans will agree that it’s good to see him back!

Downton creator Julian Fellowes is returning to write the sequel’s screenplay, and award-winning producer Gareth Neame will be overseeing the production.

“After a very challenging year with so many of us separated from family and friends, it is a huge comfort to think that better times are ahead and that next Christmas we will be reunited with the much-beloved characters of Downton Abbey,” Neame said, according to Variety.

New Characters Arriving at Downton Abbey, Too

Fans can also expect to see some new characters join the franchise. So far, we know there will be at least four new faces at Downton, including the likes of Hugh Dancy (best known for the TV series Hannibal), Laura Haddock (Guardians of the Galaxy), French actress Nathalie Baye (Catch Me If You Can), and Dominic West (The Wire).

Although Downton Abbey 2 was just confirmed this month, it has been revealed that the sequel film will hit theaters on December 22, 2021 — just in time for Christmas movie-goers. Anyone else excited that they don’t have to wait in anticipation forever? Production actually already began in April, just before the announcement was made. That means that there’s an excellent chance that they will meet that release date, unlike the host of delays we’ve come to expect from upcoming movies.

So far, we know that the sequel is happening but no plot details have been revealed as of yet. There also has not been an official trailer released, so be patient. Of course, we didn’t get a trailer for the first Downton Abbey film until four months before the release, so it’s likely we can expect the same for this second installment.
