Marvel Studios has kept a tight lid on the plot details of the Doctor Strange sequel. Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness will release early next year, yet fans are still in the dark about who, or what, the Sorcerer Supreme will fight in the film. However, a new leaked image from official merchandise for the title might have spoiled the movie’s main villain.

Great Old One Arrives in MCU

An official-looking image of a jigsaw puzzle was leaked on the Resetera forums Tuesday. The puzzle’s box art shows Stephen Strange holding his own against a massive, tentacled monster with a titanic central eye. Comics fans will immediately recognize this silhouette: it’s Shuma-Gorath, a “Many-Angled One” from another dimension.
Shuma-Gorath is an elder deity in Marvel Comics, originally appearing in Marvel Premiere #10 in 1973.

The character’s name was taken from a short story, “The Curse of the Golden Skull,” by American author Robert E. Howard. In Marvel’s comics, Shuma-Gorath is a recurring antagonist for Doctor Strange, constantly threatening to conquer the real world.

The comic book version of the character is among the most dangerous villains Strange has ever faced. Shuma-Gorath is based loosely on the Great Old Ones of HP Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos. Like the Great Old Ones, Marvel’s character is incomprehensible to most humans.

Other Appearances

The Many-Angled One has appeared in the MCU before. The television series What If…? features the tentacled monster in its fourth episode. An alternate-reality version of the Sorcerer Supreme attempts to absorb the power of the extra-dimensional entity with disastrous consequences.

The arrival of cosmic threats in the MCU could also set up new storylines for Wanda Maximoff. The Scarlet Witch’s Chaos Magic powers are the result of a deity called Chthon in the comics. Like Shuma-Gorath, Chthon is incomprehensibly ancient and powerful. Since the Scarlet Witch’s actions in WandaVision will be a central plot point in Multiverse of Madness, fans expect more details about her powers to come to light in the movie.

The Multiverse of Madness

Right now, the plot of the upcoming Doctor Strange film is a mystery. The leaked puzzle’s art shows a few other characters alongside the sorcerer, though. Strange’s ally, Wong, is present, along with Wanda Maximoff. Perhaps the most intriguing character to appear in the leak, however, is America Chavez. Chavez is better known to comic fans as Miss America, a powerful superhero.

Miss America has a standard slate of superhero powers: she’s super strong, possesses the power of flight, and is nearly impervious to injury. One of her powers stands out in the context of a Doctor Strange film, though. She can kick open holes between dimensions.

Rumors online suggest that America could be the reason Shuma-Gorath threatens Strange’s dimension. The otherwordly deity needs a way to break into the real world, after all. What better way to crash this reality than by hijacking a dimension-hopping superhero’s body?

Marvel fans are eager to find out more about the next Strange adventure. We’ll see Doctor Strange on the big screen again soon, as he will appear in the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home on December 17. After that, he’ll return to theaters for his next solo feature on May 6, 2022.
