Batman isn’t the only superhero film that gets to be edgy.
Hiram Garcia, who is a producer on Black Adam, just revealed the upcoming film will push the boundaries of what’s considered a PG-13 movie.
In fact, he explained it’ll be different than other PG-13 superhero movies due to its “very high kill count.”
He told CBR.com, “Black Adam is edgy, right? That’s gonna be a PG-13 movie where it was very much like, say, The Dark Knight, where that pushed the edges of PG-13. I think we do that very much with Black Adam.”
The film is still expected to be released in theaters in 2022.
Original story (7/20/21)
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has just wrapped filming on one of his most exciting upcoming projects: Black Adam. The film is an antihero movie that is part of the DC Universe.
Black Adam is directed by Jaume Collet-Sera, who has been behind the camera of many thriller films, including Unknown and The Commuter. Dwayne Johnson will play Teth-Adam, AKA Black Adam.
Black Adam is the enemy of the superhero Shazam. Shazam already had his own film in 2019, Shazam!, which set up much of the drama we will see in Black Adam. These movies have been in the works for a long time as executives tried to figure out the best way to portray their stories.
DC ultimately decided to make separate films about the superhero/antihero duo. This is because some executives felt that if the films were combined into one, Johnson would have to be more of a supporting actor to the main superhero, rather than a lead role himself. At this point, we all know Dwayne Johnson is a leading man!
Thus, we moviegoers have been blessed with two separate films that both explore the relationship between Shazam and Black Adam. Johnson has also hinted that we will definitely see Shazam and Black Adam meet up onscreen someday.
Other cast members of Black Adam include Pierce Brosnan, Noah Centineo, Sarah Shahi, Quintessa Swindell, and Aldis Hodge.
The ‘Hardest Undertaking’ of Johnson’s Career
According to Johnson, Black Adam was one of the most challenging movies he’s ever filmed. Apparently, the daily demands of making a superhero film are almost as strenuous as being an actual superhero!
“That [sic] a wrap on BLACK ADAM,” Johnson wrote on Twitter on July 16. “Incredible journey. Hardest undertaking of my entire career physically & mentally. Worth every second. Boundless gratitude to my 1,000+ crew members, actors and director, Jaume Collet-Serra. The hierarchy of power in DC Universe is changing.”
It’s clear that this film was extra special to Johnson. His acting resume is quite long at this point, so preparing for Black Adam must have been exceptionally tough for it to have such an impact on the former WWE champion.
Black Adam will premiere in theaters on July 29, 2022.
Dwayne Johnson’s Upcoming Films
Of course, Dwayne Johnson always has about 50 projects going on at once. The wrestler-turned-movie star has plenty of films in production right now that will air in the coming months.
Jungle Cruise is one such film. This period fantasy adventure features Emily Blunt, Jesse Plemons, an Paul Giamatti in the lead roles alongside Johnson.
Free Guy starring Ryan Reynolds was supposed to premiere in July of 2020, but the release has been delayed multiple times. This sci-fi/action/comedy film will feature Johnson in a cameo role. If all goes according to plan, the film will finally premiere on August 13, 2021.
Johnson also has a lead role next to Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds (again) in Red Notice, an action thriller that will premiere on Netflix on November 12, 2021.
As we wait for Johnson’s exciting new films to be released, we can enjoy this small glimpse of footage from the set of Black Adam to get us in the spirit!
