The new year is finally upon us. Goodbye, 2022!
It’s a time of fresh beginnings, resolutions, and soon-to-be-forgotten gym memberships. It’s also a time for new content to stream! Netflix is ready to help you ring in the new year right: from the couch!
If you ask me, January 1st should officially be renamed National Netflix Day. After everyone stays up late to celebrate the ball drop, New Year’s Day should be a day of pajamas and binge-watching on the couch. That gym membership sign-up can wait until January 2nd, okay?
So, if you’re planning on spending the first day of the new year recovering from the last day of 2022, let’s take a look at all the new stuff heading to the streaming giant starting January 1st.
Lots of Content Arriving on New Year’s Day
In terms of the number of titles, New Year’s Day will see the most movies and series hitting Netflix. This first day is when tons of content arrives. A lot of these library entries are movies, and there is a little something for everyone.
There are classics, like 1978’s Grease and 1994’s Forrest Gump. Fans of ‘90s flicks will be stoked to find I Know What You Did Last Summer and Jerry Maguire coming back to Netflix. Plus, the first five films from the Rocky franchise arrive on January 1st, as well. (No word on if or when 2006’s Rocky Balboa will join them.)
If you prefer binging a series, multiple seasons of The Mindy Project are also arriving on January 1st. Originally airing on Fox and Hulu, the romantic comedy ran for six seasons. Mindy Kaling portrays Dr. Mindy Kuhel Lahiri, a professional in New York City who wishes her personal life was as successful as her professional life.
Three anime series will also arrive first thing in January. In Monster (2004-05), a neurosurgeon finds his life is turned upside down after he becomes involved with a psychopathic former patient. We’ll get multiple seasons of this one. Kimi ni Todoke: From Me To You, adapted from the Japanese shōjo romance manga of the same name, will also arrive on Netflix. We can also expect season 2 of The Way of the Househusband (Netflix Original anime series) on January 1st.
Netflix’s New Non-Linear Heist Drama Series
There is one new Netflix Original that stands out from the rest. Kaleidoscope arrives on New Year’s Day. This series, created by Eric Garcia, is inspired by true events and is centered around the largest heist ever attempted. It spans 25 years, following a crew of skilled thieves attempting to crack a vault for the biggest payday in history. Of course, there are betrayals, corruption, scheming, vengeance, and more.
While the plot is interesting enough, the actual layout of the show is what sets it apart from everything else on Netflix right now. Kaleidoscope is nonlinear. That means that the entire show is structured so that you can watch the episodes in any order. The order you choose will likely influence your perspective as you attempt to solve the mystery. It all culminates with the 8th episode, which is the finale.
Giancarlo Esposito and Paz Vega star, along with Jai Courtney, Rufus Sewell, Tati Gabrielle, and more.
Other Notable Releases
Of course, not everything drops on that first day of January. The rest of the month is packed with releases, too!
The much-anticipated follow-up to That ‘70s Show will arrive on the streaming service in January. Just like its predecessor, That ‘90s Show is a period teen sitcom – except this time, it’s in the 1990s. (A period piece set in the ‘90s makes me feel old, but anyway…) It will feature some of the same characters and locales from That ‘70s Show. Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith are back as Kitty and Red Forman. Laura Prepon returns as Donna, and Topher Grace is back as Eric Forman. Even Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher are returning to reprise their roles as Jackie and Kelso. Expect new characters too, like teen Leia Forman, who makes friends with a new generation of Point Place kids in Wisconsin.

Netflix Original film The Pale Blue Eye will be available on the streaming service starting January 6th. Christian Bale stars as a detective investigating a series of murders at the U.S. military academy in West Point, NY, during the 1800s, and he’s doing it with the assistance of a young Edgar Allan Poe. This will be Bale’s first major Netflix Original movie. If you can’t wait until then, the film will be released in select theaters at the end of December, ahead of its streaming debut.

Among the non-English releases coming in January, I’m probably most looking forward to Contra las Cuerdas, or Against the Ropes. After Angela is released from prison, she enters the ring with a mysterious persona in an effort to regain the respect of her lucha libre-loving daughter. It’s a second-chance story, and real-life women wrestlers were consulted for the series. Netflix has it labeled as offbeat and heartfelt – plus, there’s wrestling!
