Sorting ‘The Hunger Games’ Characters into Hogwarts Houses

When we sorted ‘The Hunger Games’ characters into their Hogwarts houses, it was a lot harder than it seemed. Props to the Sorting Hat for making it look so easy!

Last month, I sorted the Disney princesses into their houses and talked about what they’d be like in the wizarding world. I just rewatched The Hunger Games movies, so I thought it would be interesting to sort these characters into their respective houses. It was a little tougher than I initially thought!

Rue: Hufflepuff

Rue couldn’t fit in any other house than Hufflepuff. From what we saw in the training sequences and the arena, she is patient and loyal. Rue immediately allied with Katniss as soon as possible. She even bided her time, hiding in the trees, until it was the right moment to make a move.

I can see her enjoying Charms and Herbology classes. And yes, Herbology is because she’s from District 11. I think she’d also be drawn to music because she just likes listening to it, not necessarily playing instruments. After Hogwarts (because she lives in this universe), she’d be a herbologist.

Beetee Latier: Ravenclaw

Beetee is by far the most intelligent character in all of the books and movies. It’s no surprise he’d be sorted into Ravenclaw. He’s driven by his curiosity and creativity, two essential traits for Ravenclaws. I feel like he’d be top of his class at Hogwarts, too.

While at Hogwarts, he’d only have trouble with Divination because it’s just not interesting to him. He’d take a class one year, and that would be it. He’d also stick to the stands at Quidditch games (if he even made it out of the library). After Hogwarts, he’d obviously be an inventor.

Plutarch Heavensbee: Slytherin

When we first met Plutarch and found out he was the Head Gamemaker, we were led to think he was just another Capitol worker. But then, when Katniss blew up the arena, we learned he’d been tricking Snow the entire time. Only a true Slytherin could pull that off. And not all Slytherins are bad guys.

Plutarch would excel at Defense Against the Dark Arts. I think he’d also spend some time during his sixth or seventh year becoming an Animagus (he’d be a fox, I think). After Hogwarts, he’d spend some time as an Auror before deciding he prefers being in an office, likely becoming Minister of Magic.

Cinna: Hufflepuff

It would be easy to look at Cinna, Katniss’s stylist, and say, “He’s creative, so Ravenclaw.” But I have to disagree. While he is creative, he’s immensely loyal to his cause and friends, extremely hard-working, and dedicated to his work. That’s why I have to put him in Hufflepuff.

I think Cinna would love Charms and Transfiguration class while at Hogwarts. He’d spend most of his time working on clothing designs and studying art. After Hogwarts, I can’t see him doing anything other than running his own shop and making clothing for witches and wizards across the globe.

Johanna Mason: Slytherin

I flip-flopped between Gryffindor and Slytherin for a while with Johanna. But I ended up going Slytherin because of what we saw in Catching Fire. She was sneaky, even in her first games. When Johanna first competed, she acted weak and helpless to make it to the end.

Johanna would do best in Defense Against the Dark Arts but also like flying class. She’d join the Quidditch team in her second year, and you can bet she’d be a beater. After Hogwarts, she’d have trouble deciding between Quidditch and Auror, but ultimately she’d join the Holyhead Harpies.

Primrose Everdeen: Ravenclaw

I wanted to put Prim in Hufflepuff because she reminded me of Hannah Abbott from Harry Potter. But I had to go with Ravenclaw because of her intelligence and problem-solving skills. When she was fixing Gale’s whip wounds, she used her creativity to help with minimal supplies on hand.

At Hogwarts, Prim would quickly come to love Potions and Herbology. She’d also spend her time cheering on her sister on the opposing team during Quidditch matches. And because she lives in this world, she’d work at St. Mungo’s, quickly becoming one of the most sought-after healers in the world.

President Coriolanus Snow: Slytherin

It’s no surprise that the Voldemort of The Hunger Games would be in Slytherin. He threatens people and their loved ones to keep the citizens of Panem in line. Snow is also always one step ahead, like when he brainwashed Peeta to try to kill Katniss in Mockingjay.

Snow would excel in History of Magic and Study of Ancient Runes at Hogwarts only because they seem prestigious to him. I also think he’d become an Animagus in his last year just to prove he could. He’d become the youngest Minister of Magic before being killed by Coin.

President Alma Coin: Slytherin

For most of the same reasoning as Snow, I had to put Coin in Slytherin. And like how I compared Snow to Voldemort, I see Coin as Hunger Games’ Gellert Grindelwald. She was manipulative and cunning, with even stronger ambitions to rule the country than anyone else in the books.

I can see Snow and Coin having the biggest rivalry in the Slytherin house, both trying to outdo the other. She’d excel in Potions, constantly experimenting with mixing different ones. After Hogwarts, she’d be stuck on desk duty as Snow’s secretary before being arrested for poisoning him.

Finnick Odair: Hufflepuff

I’ve seen so many people put Finnick in Gryffindor, but he’s a true Hufflepuff through and through. He literally died for his friends. He’s also a happy-go-lucky guy–a trait shared by most Hufflepuffs.

Finnick would love Care of Magical Creatures and Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts. He’d also be a Hufflepuff Chaser for three years before becoming the Seeker in his fifth year. After Hogwarts, he’d join a Quidditch team before marrying Annie and settling down as a Curse-Breaker.

Effie Trinket: Ravenclaw

It was pretty easy sorting Effie into Ravenclaw because she’s one of the most creative characters in the series. Have you seen her wardrobe? In addition, she took a District 13 uniform and turned it into an outfit that stood out. She’s also a stickler for schedules and being on time. What a Ravenclaw!

Much like Cinna, Effie would gravitate towards Charms and Transfiguration. She’d also be the student who always showed up to class at least ten minutes ahead of time. She wouldn’t be caught dead on a Quidditch team but would cheer them on in the stands. After Hogwarts, she’d work with Cinna at his shop as a stylist.

Haymitch Abernathy: Gryffindor

Much like Johanna, I went back and forth between Gryffindor and Slytherin for Haymitch. But I landed on Gryffindor for two main reasons. He is both passionate and reckless, which are typical Gryffindor traits. He even loses his head because of what he’s passionate about sometimes.

Haymitch would be the best Defense Against the Dark Arts student of his year and the Keeper for his house’s Quidditch team starting in his second year. After Hogwarts, I see him hitting it off with Effie and being one of the best Aurors in the world. He’d retire early but would still help Effie with the shop.

Gale Hawthorne: Gryffindor

Gale is a natural leader, so it’s no surprise he’s in Gryffindor. He’s also passionate about the rebellion and is willing to put himself on the line to save those he loves. And while he is extremely loyal to Katniss because he loves her, it felt he is more concerned with winning the war.

I could see Gale wanting to be on the Quidditch team but never quite making it. He’d then spend most of his time working on Defense Against the Dark Arts. Gale would also spend time trying to become an Animagus, but it’s just too complex for him. He’d become an Auror because that’s what he’s good at.

Peeta Mellark: Hufflepuff

You can’t look at that cinnamon roll of a person and not say he’s a Hufflepuff. Even before the games, he was loyal to Katniss because of his crush. He even went as far as volunteering in Catching Fire to keep her safe. In addition, he’s patient, moral, and just wants a peaceful life.

Just like Arthur Weasley, Peeta would love Muggle Studies. He’d also come close to failing Herbology but would scrape by. He’d also be the Hufflepuff Keeper for two years before deciding he’d instead work on his art. After Hogwarts, he’d open his own bakery and have an art side hustle.

Katniss Everdeen: Slytherin

It would be too easy to just put Katniss in Gryffindor because she’s the main character. But, let’s be honest, she’s more of a Slytherin. She’s resourceful, cunning, determined, and loyal to a select few. Katniss is also willing to do whatever it takes to protect her family. Sounds like a Slytherin to me.

Katniss wouldn’t care much about school, but she’d come to excel in Astronomy and Transfiguration. She’d join Gale on his quest to become an Animagus, doing better at it than him (she’d be a wolf). After Hogwarts, she’d become an Auror before settling down with Peeta and helping run the bakery.
