Happy 20th anniversary, Legally Blonde! That’s right folks, everyone’s favorite Gemini vegetarian is finally returning to the big screen.

Elle Woods fans might have to wait a bit longer for another Legally Blonde movie — but hey, at least we’ve got a release date and some casting news!

Legally Blonde 3 Finally Has New Release Date

Reese Witherspoon will reprise her iconic role as blonde sorority girl turned lawyer Elle Woods for a third installment in MGM’s Legally Blonde franchise, just a little later than initially expected.

The threequel was originally scheduled to open mid-February 2020. And while it’s easy to assume that’s because of the coronavirus pandemic shuttering movie theaters, it was quietly derailed long before that.

In any case, we’ve finally been given a new date to look forward to. MGM announced on its Twitter account this week that the film is coming!

“Elle Woods is back! Legally Blonde 3 coming May 2022. We rest our case,” the media company wrote.

Mindy Kaling (The Office) and Dan Goor (Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) wrote the screenplay for Legally Blonde 3 and Jamie Suk is on board to direct the project. Marc Platt, who produced the first two films, is returning for the third. Witherspoon is also on board to produce the third installment, through her company, Hello Sunshine.

What’s in Store for Elle Woods in the New Film?

As to be expected with something as iconic as Legally Blonde, plot details have been kept under wraps. She pursued a law degree at Harvard University in the first, and then pursued a career in politics when she went to Washington D.C. in the sequel. What’s next for Elle Woods?

An interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2019 may have give us at least a small glimpse into what’s next for Elle Woods.

Reese Witherspoon and producer Marc Platt talked to the outlet in December 2019 while still in the development stage of reviving the franchise. Both said they were excited about seeing Elle Woods in her 40s.

“I want to discover what age means to that character,” Witherspoon said. “Aging, contemporary ideas, how things have evolved — or not evolved.”

Who Will Be In the Third Film?

In honor of Legally Blonde’s 20th birthday, Reese sat down with Entertainment Tonight to discuss the original film and shared some casting news about the third installment.

While she didn’t specify who would be joining her for Legally Blonde 3, I think it’s fairly safe to assume will see plenty of the fan favorites, such as Luke Wilson (who plays her husband Emmett).

“I got to go to a meeting the other day where we talked about all the new plot points and all the characters and some returning characters and some new characters. I mean, I got so excited just in the meeting. I was like, ‘This is gonna be good,'” she explained.

In fact, Luke also told Entertainment Tonight that he was down to return. “I can’t imagine anything that would be more fun. Reese played such a great character,” he shared.

Along with Emmett, there’s no question fans will also want to see Elle’s ex-boyfriend, Warner (played by Matthew Davis), her BFF Vivian (played by Selma Blair), and of course her nail technician friend Paulette (played by Jennifer Coolidge).

The Virtual Legally Blonde Reunion

News about Legally Blonde 3 came just a day after Witherspoon hosted a Legally Blonde virtual reunion in October 2020 featuring Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Jennifer Coolidge, Ali Larter, Holland Taylor, and more. #LegallyBlondeReunion

During the reunion, Witherspoon got a little emotional.

“I can’t tell you what it means to me to see your faces,” she told her Legally Blonde castmates. “This was my college. This is where I went to college. I didn’t finish college, but I finished Legally Blonde. We all worked together and made this movie together that has inspired so many young people. It’s just such a gift.”

She also dropped a tidbit of info about an infamous scene in the first movie.

“People always, always ask me to do the ‘Bend and Snap,” Witherspoon said. “That was a full musical sequence that we ended up cutting out of the movie. It was just so fun, but it felt so odd because it was only one sequence.”

Is there any way we can see this fantastic scene? Someone pull that off the cutting floor for me, stat!

Anyway, it’s time to start practicing your ‘Bend and Snap’ — it might be a while away, but Legally Blonde 3 will hit theaters in May 2022.
