The beloved children’s book, Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, is getting another film adaptation next year with an all-star cast and new original music. The only difference from the last adaptation is this film will be a hybrid live-action and animated movie.
Who’s Been Cast So Far?
Only five cast members have been announced, but we still don’t know their characters. I can’t wait to see who’s portraying the lovable crocodile, Lyle.
Javier Bardem was the first actor announced in the film. Bardem was most recently in Dune, The Good Boss, and is set to play King Triton in Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid remake.
Winslow Fegley was cast less than a month after Bardem. He was recently in Nightbooks, 8 Bit Christmas, and Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made.
In September, Constance Wu, best known for Crazy Rich Asians and Fresh Off the Boat, was cast. Shortly after, Lyric Hurd was cast. Hurd was most recently in All In on BET, Roxanne, Roxanne, and Blue Bloods.
Most recently announced was Brett Gelman. He is most known for his role as Martin in Fleabag and was recently in Without Remorse with Michael B. Jordan.
Who Else Is Working on the Musical?
The film was announced by Sony Pictures, the production company behind the movie, on May 17, 2021. Brittany Morrissey will be overseeing the project for the company.
How to Train Your Dragon screenplay writer William Davis wrote the Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile screenplay. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul also joined the project to write the original music, compose the score, and executive produce. Pasek and Paul also previously wrote music for La La Land and the film adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen.
Will Speck and Josh Gordon are directing and producing the film. The duo is also currently producing Distant and Hit Monkey.
Hutch Parker is also producing. Hutch Parker Entertainment’s Dan Wilson and Speck & Gordon’s Kevin K. Vafi also signed on to executive produce the project.
Filming began in New York City shortly after Wu’s casting was announced. Notable locations include 85th Street, 86th Street, Broadway between 45th and 46th Street, and Astor Place and Bowery station.
What’s The Movie About?
Bernard Waber’s book from 1965 tells the story of Lyle, a crocodile living in a house on 88th Street in New York City. It is a direct sequel to the 1962 book The House on East 88th Street.
Lyle the crocodile loves helping his neighbors and playing with the neighborhood children. Everyone loves him, and everything is going great for Lyle until one neighbor, Mr. Grumps, gets him sent to a zoo. Mr. Grumps says Lyle scares his cat, Loretta. However, Lyle will do anything to make the man and his cat like him. It takes the crocodile rescuing Mr. Grumps to get his approval to stay in the neighborhood.
The previous adaptation was an animated musical from 1987. It was a part of the HBO Storybook Musicals’ lineup.
As long as the crocodile doesn’t look anything like the cat people from the 2019 CATS musical movie, I think this movie will be a success. We also will be getting songs from the masterminds behind La La Land.
Fingers crossed it doesn’t get pushed back again. It’s currently slated to make it to theaters on November 18, 2022.
Any guesses for who’s playing Lyle and who will be Mr. Grumps?
