Let’s kick off the new year with a bang, alright? It’s a new year with new Netflix titles!
If you’re ready for something new to watch, Netflix has got you covered. January will see a whole slew of new content hitting the streaming service. You’ll find plenty of variety, from family-friendly movies and animated kids’ series to international dramas and horror anthologies. Some of it is brand-spankin’ new, but you’ll also find familiar classics you haven’t seen in a while.
Plenty of Netflix Originals Coming in January 2022
First off, let’s talk about brand new TV shows and movies. Netflix is bringing tons of originals in January 2022.
Archive 81 is a horror-thriller series coming to Netflix on January 14. It’s a loose adaptation of the horror podcast series of the same name. You can also expect a new dark comedy stop-motion series titled The House, and In From the Cold written by Supernatural’s Adam Glass.
As an Alfred Hitchcock fan, I’m pretty excited to check out The Woman In The House Across The Street From The Girl In The Window. This satire stars Kristen Bell and parodies thriller movies with female leads. Kristen Bell is also an executive producer for the series, alongside Will Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum, and Brittney Segal.
Munich–The Edge of War will be one of the first major Netflix Original movies in 2022 when it hits the streamer on January 21. Adapted from a Robert Harris novel, this drama follows a British diplomat traveling to Munich in the fall of 1938, with Europe on the brink of World War II.
For something entirely different, Netflix is releasing Hype House on January 7. The reality series follows the “compelling lives of some of the world’s biggest social media stars.” It takes place inside the Hype House, a mansion in Los Angeles where a collective of teenage TikTok personalities do their thing. The series will star Larri Merrit, Nikita Dragun, LILHUDDY, Thomas Petrou, and other TikTok influencers.
Not on the list? Netflix decided Cowboy Bebop was a Cowboy Be-Flop and canceled it only weeks after its premiere.
Netflix is also bringing plenty of non-English Originals in January. Spanish teen comedy Rebelde is getting a reboot, and the Korean zombie series All of Us Are Dead looks promising.
The Beast, a new Spanish horror film that premiered at the Sitges Film Festival will join Netflix’s catalog, but under the name The Wasteland thanks to another title in their library called The Beast. You’ll also be able to check out Photocopier, an Indonesian coming-of-age drama that tells the story of a student who lost her scholarship after a selfie surfaced online.
Old Favorites That Will Be Added to Netflix’s Library
The streaming giant is dropping plenty of familiar content, too.
In movies, you’ll find two classic vampire flicks to sink your teeth into: on January 1, subscribers get Interview With the Vampire, the 1994 film starring Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and Kirsten Dunst and based on the late Anne Rice’s novel of the same name; we’ll also get The Lost Boys, the 1984 black comedy vampire movie starring Jason Patric, Corey Haim, Kiefer Sutherland, Corey Feldman, Dianne Wiest, and more.
My nostalgia will be at an all-time high, thanks to the additions of Hook (1991) with Robin Williams, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie (1990), and 1993’s Free Willy – which I haven’t even seen since it was in theaters, to be honest. Fantasy lovers will be pleased to revisit 1984’s The NeverEnding Story when it appears on the streaming service on the first of the year. Oh, and the 1984 classic Gremlins is heading to Netflix on January 1. It won’t be in time for Christmas viewings, but better late than never, right?
Looking for something a little different? Netflix is adding Will Smith’s bizarre steampunk western Wild Wild West to its catalog this January, too. Why? I have no idea. But watching it for free on Netflix sure beats paying theater prices back in 1999, right? It really is wild.
And if you’re looking for something to keep yourself entertained, both 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory starring Johnny Depp and 1976’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory starring Gene Wilder are hitting Netflix. Invite your friends over for a Chocolate Factory marathon, and then start an argument about which one is better. Thanks for the golden ticket, Netflix!
