What is ‘The School for Good and Evil’?

Sophie believes she will become a princess while her friend, Agatha, is declared a witch. Both girls are kidnapped to the School for Good and Evil, a magical academy where students are trained to become fairytale heroes and villains. Their friendship is tested when Agatha is taken to the School for Good and Sophie to the School for Evil.

The School for Good and Evil is the first book in the six-book School for Good and Evil series by Soman Chainani. When it first came out in 2013, Universal bought the rights. In 2017, the rights went back up for acquisition, and Netflix quickly got them.

Chainani already announced the movie would be significantly different from the book, including only major plot points, character development, and fan favorites. The goal was to make the film similar to the book while staying under budget. He also said the movie will surprise fans of the series.

Paul Feig, who is known for his work on Freaks and Geeks, is directing and producing the film. Other producers are Joe Roth, Jeffery Kirschenbaum, Jane Startz, and Laura Fischer. Author Chainani co-wrote the movie with David Magee, Laura Solon, and Malia Scotch Marmo.

Filming wrapped earlier this year, and Feig got started editing right away. He said he wants the special effects to look “real.” The movie is expected to debut sometime in 2022.
