Good news, Shang Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings fans…we’re getting a sequel!
A second installment of the MCU film was announced on Monday, December 6, as well as the news Destin Daniel Cretton will be returning as writer and director.
But that’s not all that was announced. While Cretton will be returning to the Shang-Chi universe, he’ll also be developing a Marvel series for Disney+.
Cretton Signed a Multi-Year Deal
According to Deadline, Cretton signed a multi-year deal with both Marvel Studios and Hulu’s Onyx Collective. Under this deal, he will develop TV projects for Marvel on Disney Plus, as well as for the Onyx Collective.
“Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.’ We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney Plus, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started,” Kevin Feige said in a statement.

Needless to say, Cretton is excited to work on new Marvel projects and expand the Shang-Chi universe.
“Working on ‘Shang-Chi’ with Kevin and the Marvel Studios team was one of the highlights of my life, and I couldn’t be more excited about Tara’s vision for Onyx Collective. I can’t wait to explore new stories & build new worlds with this community,” he shared.
‘Shang-Chi’ Was a Big Success
Despite being a brand new character in the MCU, Shang-Chi did great business at the box office this year.
Released over Labor Day weekend, the film brought in $224.5 million at the domestic box office and over $400 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2021.
Star Simu Liu reacted to the sequel news on Twitter, writing, “Flopped so hard we got a sequel!!”
