The Thanksgiving Text That Turned Into a Tradition

In 2016, Wanda Dench was trying to text her grandson about Thanksgiving dinner plans — except she accidentally added a stranger to the text. It was Jamal Hinton, a high school senior at the time. Confused, Jamal asked who it was, to which Wanda responded, “Your grandma.”

A selfie revealed that she was definitely not Jamal’s grandma, but he jokingly asked if he could still come over for dinner.

“Of course you can. That’s what grandmas do… feed everyone,” Wanda responded, and the rest is history.

After Jamal showed up that year for real, the two actually became friends. They didn’t just stay in touch, either. In fact, Jamal and Wanda have celebrated the holiday together every year since!

Jamal documents their holiday hangs each year on social media. This year, they marked their sixth Thanksgiving together, complete with their annual selfie. The post also featured their photos from throughout the last several Thanksgiving gatherings together. Included in the photos are Jamal’s girlfriend, and Wanda’s late husband, Lonnie, who unexpectedly passed in April 2020.

Both Jamal and Wanda have amassed tons of followers on social media, who like to check in with their favorite unlikely pair. Some comments reveal that their friendship has become a “favorite Thanksgiving tradition” for many. You have to admit, it’s a heartwarming story!

Jamal and Wanda’s Story to Be Made Into a Feel-Good Movie

Jamal made another post recently to social media. This time, it was to announce that their feel-good story will be the subject of a new movie. The film will be made by streaming giant Netflix.

“I am very excited to announce our new partnership with Netflix,” Jamal wrote on both his Twitter and Instagram. “We thank every single one of you for your love and support in our journey this last 6 years. We can’t wait to tell our story on the big screen!”

According to Variety, the feature film will be called The Thanksgiving Text. It will recount the true story of how Wanda and Jamal met in 2016, spawning an unlikely friendship and a heartwarming holiday tradition.

“We are excited to share our story with the world. We hope it inspires more people to reach out and make connections that they wouldn’t ordinarily make,” said Wanda and Jamal in a joint statement to the outlet.

The statement continued, “We are so blessed to find a genuine friendship brought together by God from a mistaken text message.”

Abdul Williams, who is behind the likes of Lottery Ticket and The Bobby Brown Story, is reportedly on board to write the screenplay. Producers include Robert Teitel and George Tillman, Jr. for State Street Pictures. So far, the film has not been cast, and a director has not been announced.
