Hollywood is back at it again with another new film based on Roald Dahl’s classic novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The film has apparently been in development for almost five years, starting about ten years after the Johnny Depp version of the story premiered.

And if the film can be put together by the end of this year, it will mark the 50th anniversary of the original film adaptation of the story, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Stars Being Eyed for Role of Willy Wonka

This time, Warner Bros. wants to explore the origin story of Willy Wonka himself, allowing the producers much more creative freedom with the original story, which does not go into those details.

Collider reports that sources say the titular role of the upcoming Wonka will likely go to either Tom Holland or Timothée Chalamet – because really, are you even allowed to call yourself a filmmaker if you’re not somehow tied to Chalamet these days?

Both actors are in their mid-twenties, and while neither has been officially offered the role (that we know of), they have some big shoes to fill when it comes to following Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp’s very different portrayals of the character.

Who’s Behind Wonka?

Although we don’t know much about the cast or the storyline yet, we do know of a few big names that are tied to this upcoming project.

The script will be written by Simon Rich, whose massively popular 2013 short story “Sell Out” was recently turned into the Seth Rogen comedy-drama, An American Pickle, the screenplay of which he also wrote.

Two-time BAFTA Film Awards nominee Paul King is a director who specializes in comedy, perhaps best known for his work on 2014’s Paddington. He is set to direct Wonka – and with his CGI aptitude, we can be sure that we’ll be treated to a world of pure imagination in this new film.

This highly creative team might be the perfect duo to imagine what the world of Willy Wonka was like before he came to the chocolate factory. Rich and King have proven themselves as adept comedic voices in the cinematic world, so this new film could be a really big deal.

More Road Dahl Is Coming to Netflix, Too

Separate from this upcoming film, Netflix signed a deal with The Roald Dahl Story Company back in 2018 for the rights to adapt stories like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG, The Twits, and more.

Taika Waititi has signed on to write, direct and produce two original animated series based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. One will be based on the original story and its characters, and the other will be a brand-new imagining of the lives of the Oompa Loompas.

Waititi is a great pick; he recently directed 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, as well as 2019’s critically-acclaimed Jojo Rabbit, for which he won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. The 45-year-old filmmaker from New Zealand has also been praised for co-directing and starring in 2014’s beloved horror-comedy, What We Do in the Shadows.
