Mike Flanagan, the creator of The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor, is bringing yet another horror series to Netflix.

The upcoming limited series is titled Midnight Mass, and Netflix just dropped the spine-tingling trailer. You can watch all seven episodes in one epic binge-watch next month–just don’t forget to leave the lights on.

What Is ‘Midnight Mass’ About?

Netflix has already released a synopsis for the series, and it sounds so good:

Midnight Mass tells the tale of a small, isolated island community whose existing divisions are amplified by the return of a disgraced young man (Zach Gilford) and the arrival of a charismatic priest (Hamish Linklater). When Father Paul’s appearance on Crockett Island coincides with unexplained and seemingly miraculous events, a renewed religious fervor takes hold of the community – but do these miracles come at a price?

In addition to Gilford and Linklater, the cast includes Kate Siegel (Flanagan’s real-life wife!), Annabeth Gish, Michael Trucco, Samantha Sloyan, Henry Thomas, Alex Essoe, Rahul Kohli, and Kristin Lehman.

You’ll doubtless recognize many of those names from previous Mike Flanagan projects for Netflix. No Carla Guigino this time, though.

Mike Flanagan also posted a letter online to explain how he’s feeling about Midnight Mass, which he calls his “favorite project so far.”

“As a former altar boy, about to celebrate 3 years of sobriety, it’s hard not to see what makes this so personal. The ideas at the root of this show scare me to my core,” he writes.

“But this show is about something else as well…faith itself. One of the great mysteries of human nature. How even in the darkness, in the worst of it, in the absence of light – and hope –we sing. I hope you enjoy our song.”

Revisit Flanagan’s Other Haunted Houses

Not a big horror fan? Mike Flanagan’s experience and talent in the horror television space might convince you to try this series out for size. His previous projects have been reviewed incredibly well, and early fans of Flanagan’s are stoked to see what he’s going to do with this next show.

Flanagan created The Haunting of Hill House, a 10-episode series that premiered on Netflix in October of 2018. The series received critical acclaim for its acting, directing, and production value. A loose adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s short story of the same name, the eerie atmosphere and family tragedy set it apart from standard slasher fare.

Then, Flanagan followed up Hill House with The Haunting of Bly Manor in October of 2020. The cast remained largely the same, but the story and the characters were all new. This series centers around a mysterious, haunted manor in the United Kingdom. He drew inspiration from the work of Henry James, especially The Turn of the Screw, for this volume.

It’s well worth your time to revisit Flanagan’s previous series for Netflix just to spot all the secrets you might have missed the first time!
