Tom Holland’s Latest Role “Broke Him”

We've been waiting for a trailer since 2008 when it was announced that 'Uncharted' was being adapted into a movie. The day has finally come, and the trailer looks just as great as we were hoping.

Tom Holland may be known for his athleticism while playing Spiderman, but his role at Nathan Drake was a completely new experience.

Holland recalled the physical and mental difficulties working on the film to GQ recently. He had developed tendonitis by the time filming wrapped. He said he was under a lot of pressure to finish each day’s scenes, regardless of how exhausted he was.

“I never realized how lucky I am that Spider-Man wears a mask because when he’s bouncing around and flying from buildings, that all CG. In Uncharted, it’s just me in a henley and cargo pants. That film absolutely broke me.”

It’s been in the making for over a decade, but Uncharted has finally dropped its first theatrical trailer on October 21, and it looks like it’s pulled straight out of the games.

What’s ‘Uncharted’?

Uncharted is the prequel to the widely acclaimed game series of the same name. The movie will follow our beloved treasure hunters Nathan Drake and Victor “Sully” Sullivan on their first adventure together. It follows the events leading up to the first video game, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

“Based on one of the best-selling and most critically acclaimed video game series of all time, Uncharted tells the story of Nathan Drake and his first adventure with rival-turned-partner Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan,” Sony Pictures Publicity said. “Uncharted will introduce audiences to how Nathan Drake becomes a treasure hunter as he unravels one of history’s greatest mysteries and treasures in an action-adventure epic that spans the globe.”

It’s unknown if there will be any sequels past this film, but if there are, I hope it follows the games’ storylines. It would be the perfect way to further bring gamers and non-gamers together to love this franchise.

“For the fans that love the games, they’re getting an aspect of the story that they’ve never seen before,” Tom Holland, who stars in the film, told Den of Geek. “The people that haven’t played the games are getting a really nice introduction to a character. It kind of works for everyone.”

We’ve already seen shots reminiscent of the games in the first trailer. Some of those shots include a cargo plane scene from Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, a ship trapped in a cave from Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and mentions of Drake’s brother Sam who shows up in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

Uncharted is set to premiere in the United States on February 18, 2022, a week after its United Kingdom premiere.

Who’s Playing Our Beloved Characters?

Tom Holland, who’s best known as the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, is portraying Nathan Drake. Drake is a young treasure hunter who claims to be descended from Sir Frances Drake. Holland’s experience in Spider-Man brings an edge to the action scenes we’re bound to see when the movie premieres.

Mark Wahlberg will be playing Drake’s mentor and father figure Victor Sullivan, more commonly known as Sully. Wahlberg was actually initially cast as Drake in 2010. We’ve already seen Wahlberg play fatherly characters and tough-as-nails characters, so we can’t wait to see what he brings as Sully.

Chloe Frazer, Drake’s love interest, will be played by Sophia Taylor Ali. I know Ali from her role in Amazon Prime Video’s The Wilds, but she’s also been in Faking It and Grey’s Anatomy. In both games that Frazer has shown up in, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, it’s hinted that Drake and Frazer have a romantic past. It seems like we’ll be getting that story in this movie.

Antonio Banderas also joined the cast, but his role has been mostly unknown. All we know of Banderas’s character is that he’ll be playing the film’s villain, described as a “ruthless treasure hunter.”

The last known character from the movie is Braddock, a movie-exclusive character played by Tati Gabrielle. Gabrielle is best known for her roles in The 100, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and season three of You. I’m excited to see how she is involved in Drake and Sully’s adventure.

Who Else Is Attached to the Film?

Since the announcement that a movie was in the works in 2008, Uncharted has had many producers, directors, and crew members come and go.

One thing that hasn’t changed is Avi Arad as a producer. Arad said in 2008 that he was working with Sony Pictures Releasing to develop the film. He has served as producer on many films, including Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and as executive producer on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man movies.

Other producers include Ari Arad, Alex Gartner, and Charles Roven. Chung-hoon Chung was in charge of cinematography for Uncharted. Asad Qizilbash serves as executive producer.

The finalized screenplay was done by the Iron Man duo Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. However, some of the past screenwriters who have worked on Uncharted still have writing credits.

Uncharted is PlayStation Productions’ first project slated for wide theatrical release. PlayStation Productions produced the 2014 animated film Heavenly Sword and the 2016 film Ratchet & Clank for digital release. They are also currently working on the upcoming HBO series The Last of Us.

The trailer drop comes just ahead of the PlayStation remastered bundle of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy for PlayStation5 and PC being released in early 2022.
