Selena Quintanilla will forever be remembered as the voice who changed the Tex-Mex music scene forever, and now, 25 years after her death, her legacy continues to be celebrated.

The late Tejano singer’s life will be featured on the small screen thanks to Netflix’s new Selena: The Series, which is slated to premiere in early December.

And who is playing the role of Selena? None other than Christian Serratos, who plays Rosita Espinosa in AMC’s The Walking Dead TV series.

‘Selena: The Series’ – What is it About?

In this new series by Netflix, Selena: The Series will chronicle the singer’s life as she and her family make “life-changing choices” all in the name of achieving musical success.

Selena began her singing career at the young age of 10 while performing in her family’s band, Selena y Los Dinos, along with her sister, Suzette Quintanilla and A.B. Quintanilla. They were all originally from Lake Jackson, Texas.

As Selena got older, she quickly became one of the most influential crossover artists, who gained momentum among English speakers and resonated with the Latino community.

Known as the Mexican Madonna, she went on to win Best Mexican-American Album in 1994 at the Grammy Awards. A year later, Selena performed at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, garnering a record-breaking audience.

Sadly, just a month later on March 31, 1995, Selena was murdered by the founder of her fan club, Yolanda Saldívar. Selena was only 23 years old.

In this new series, a closer look will be taken at Selena’s familial relationships, her marriage to her husband Chris Perez, and her one-of-a-kind fashion style.

When Will Selena: The Series Premiere?

You can see Selena: The Series for yourself starting on Friday, December 4 on Netflix. It is a two-part scripted show that will begin with Part 1, with six one-hour episodes.

It was in November 2019 when Netflix first gave fans a sneak peek of what they could expect from the new series. They provided a behind-the-scenes cinematic shot that featured the cast getting ready for production.

In the teaser video, Christian was seen applying Selena’s signature red lipstick, softly singing “Como La Flor,” while putting on her iconic purple jumpsuit.

One interesting thing to note, however. The series will not feature Selena’s original music, but will instead include covers.

Who is in the Cast of the New Netflix Selena: The Series?

The Quintanilla family has spent the past two decades dedicated to preserving the memory of Selena, and this new series by Netflix is yet another milestone they’ve achieved along the way.

It was back in December 2018 that Netflix confirmed that they were working together with the Quintanilla family to develop and produce Selena: The Series along with creator and executive producer Moisés Zamora.

Here are the main cast members you can expect to see:

Christian Serratos as Selena.

Madison Taylor Baez as Young Selena

Seidy Lopez as Marcella Quintanilla, Selena’s mother

Ricardo Chavira as Abraham Quintanilla Jr., Selena’s father

Noemi Gonzalez as Suzette Quintanilla, Selena’s sister and best friend

Gabriel Chavarria as A.B. Quintanilla III, Selena’s brother

Jesse Posey as Chris Perez, Selena’s husband

“What I find most enduring about Selena is her ability to defy boundaries,” Christian said about the late singer. “She paved the way for Latinas and inspired so many to continue in the face of adversity. I will be forever grateful for the memories she has given me.”
