First introduced as the Jedi Padawan of Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano grew to be a powerful Force user who has made plenty of impact in the Star Wars galaxy.

This Force-sensitive Togruta may have first been introduced in an ill-received animated film, but that didn’t keep her from rising to prominence. In fact, Ahsoka may be one of the most popular Star Wars characters that was not introduced in the original trilogy.

Of course, she didn’t start off as popular. She was just Anakin’s Padawan – and some may have even deemed her annoying. However, as she grew past being brash and impulsive, she grew in popularity. Fans watched her turn into a compassionate, brave, and strong Jedi, and they loved her for it.

Even if you have never watched The Clone Wars or other animated projects in the Star Wars universe, I’m willing to bet you still know who Ahsoka is. However, you may not know anything about her past, her personality, or her abilities.

After her appearance on The Mandalorian, it was announced that she would get her own spin-off show – much like other fan-favorite, Boba Fett. In fact, Ahsoka will take place during the same time as The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. And after seeing Mando show up on Boba Fett, it’ll be interesting to see if Ahsoka’s series will be intertwined the same way.

We don’t know exactly when Ahsoka will drop – not yet, anyway. It looks like it might be 2023 before we get to see the series. But before we get there, let’s take a look at all the canon appearances that advanced her character and story.

The Clone Wars

Ahsoka Tano in The Clone Wars

Audiences first met Ahsoka on-screen with Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This one is not to be confused with the TV series Star Wars: Clone Wars, which is great – but not canon.

Instead, we’re talking about The Clone Wars, which came out in 2008. It is set between the events of Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. There was a movie first, which served as an introduction to the TV series of the same name.

In the movie, a young Ahsoka Tano arrives, saying she was sent by Master Yoda to serve as Anakin’s Padawan. She aides Anakin, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Rex, Cody, and the clone army as they battle for the Republic on Christophsis. They are then charged with finding Jabba’s son, who has been kidnapped as part of a plan orchestrated by Ziro the Hutt and Count Dooku.

Once we get into the series, this is where Ahsoka really shines. Throughout The Clone Wars, Ahsoka fights in battles alongside Anakin and Obi-Wan. We see her grow from a headstrong, impulsive student into a mature, strong, and capable leader. She also develops a close friendship with another Padawan named Barriss Offee.

It is during The Clone Wars that Ahsoka cuts ties with the Jedi Order. After being framed for a bombing in the Jedi Temple, she is expelled from the Order and turned over to the Republic’s military. Anakin did his own investigation and ultimately cleared his Padawan’s name, but Ahsoka lost faith in the Order after the ordeal. Aside from Anakin, everyone refused to believe in her innocence. After this, she tells her mentor that she must find her own way.

Star Wars: Forces of Destiny

Star Wars: Forces of Destiny is a 2D animated series that was released through Disney’s YouTube channel. It also aired on Disney Channel. Altogether, it’s a collection of shorts that center on female characters from Star Wars. Among characters like Princess Leia, Rey Skywalker, and Padmé Amidala, Ahsoka gets episodes as well.

We see Ahsoka team up with Padmé to subdue an assassin, and she also teaches Padmé to pilot a jet fighter in a different episode. She even receives praise from Master Yoda after rescuing civilians and receives a bead for her Padawan braid.

Ahsoka (Novel by E.K. Johnston)

Ahsoka novel by E.K. Johnston

Fans were left wondering what happened to Ahsoka after she left the Jedi Order towards the end of The Clone Wars. Ahsoka arrived in 2016 to answer those questions. The novel by E.K. Johnston takes place after The Clone Wars and before Ahsoka re-appears in Star Wars Rebels.

In this novel, Ahsoka discovers the location of former Sith Lord Maul. He has taken over Mandalore again and gained leadership of the Death Watch. She reaches out to Anakin and Obi-Wan, but the Jedis are called to rescue Chancellor Palpatine from General Grievous. She doesn’t know it at the time, but this is the last time she sees Anakin as a friend. They won’t cross paths again until after Ani has become Darth Vader.

The book also gives insight into what happens to Ahsoka after Darth Sidious enacts Order 66, the command that turned her clone allies against her and other Jedi across the galaxy. She survives and flees to the Outer Rim to hide from the Empire. With a new name, she worked as a mechanic in a farming community. Her desire to fight the Empire and help people couldn’t keep her hidden for too long, though. She drew the attention of both the Empire and Senator Bail Organa.

Star Wars Rebels

Animated series Star Wars Rebels takes place between Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV – A New Hope. The Galactic Empire is tightening its grip on the galaxy, but a rebellion is forming (as the name implies).

The series centers on a ragtag group aboard the starship Ghost as they fight against the Empire. With the help of Senator Bail Organa’s resistance movement, the crew eventually helps give rise to the Rebel Alliance.

After Organa learns of Ahsoka Tano’s rebel activity during the Ahsoka novel, he recruited her into his movement. Ahsoka first hides her identity while she aids the rebels aboard Ghost in their fight against the Empire. She disguises her voice and is known only as “Fulcrum” as she provides missions and intelligence. Fulcrums were Organa’s secret agents.

After a season of secrecy, Ahsoka returns full force for season two and is reunited with Clone Captain Rex. She also comes face to face with her former master, who is now Darth Vader. This is the first time she learns of Anakin’s fate.

The Mandalorian

Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano in The Mandalorian

Ahsoka surprised fans everywhere when she showed up in Disney’s hit series The Mandalorian. It was her live-action debut! We had only seen her on-screen in animated installments before this show.

Previous to this, she had set out on a journey to look for a Jedi named Ezra, who had been pulled into hyperspace with Grand Admiral Thrawn. When we see her again on The Mandalorian, we learn that she is still searching for Ezra. She may be getting closer to finding him, though, as the episode hints that she has learned the location of Thrawn.

Ahsoka does help Din Djarin and Grogu during the appearance. She can communicate with Grogu through the Force, and this is when we first learn his name. Although Din was hoping Ahsoka would take Grogu under her wing for training, she refuses after seeing his attachment to the Mandalorian. She does at least point Din in the right direction, telling him to take the child to an ancient Jedi planet, where he can choose to reach out to another Jedi who might train him.

Star Wars: Ahsoka

Ahsoka’s appearance on The Mandalorian leads up to her own spin-off series, Ahsoka. It takes place five or so years after Star Wars: Episode VI – The Return of the Jedi, the same as The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.

So far, there haven’t been a ton of details released about what we might see in the series. We do know that Rosario Dawson will return as the titular character. If the series follows her appearance on The Mandalorian, we will see her chase down Thrawn. The Imperial Grand Admiral went missing just prior to the events of the original Star Wars trilogy, and Ezra went missing alongside him.

It has been announced that Hayden Christensen will appear in the series as Anakin Skywalker. It’s unclear in what capacity, though, considering Ani has already perished a few years before the series takes place. But hey, we can always count on Force ghosts and flashbacks, right?

Ahsoka and Rex in The Clone Wars

We could potentially see Temeura Morrison make an appearance on Ahsoka, too. Ahsoka’s friend, Clone Captain Rex, is still alive and kicking at this point – and he is a clone after all, so Morrison would be the actor for the job.

As for other characters from Ahsoka’s animated adventures, the jury is still out. I’m hoping to see Barriss Offee, Ahsoka’s former Padawan friend from their days in the Jedi Order. Could we also see Sabine Wren, Hera Syndulla, and Ezra? Only time will tell.
