I’ve sorted Hunger Games characters and Disney princesses into their Hogwarts houses, so it’s time for Avatar: The Last Airbender to have its turn.

I’ll only be talking about the main characters of the original series and imagining what their lives would be like if they lived in the Harry Potter universe. I didn’t include my favorite (Cabbage Guy), but in case you were wondering, he’s a Hufflepuff because he is loyal to his cabbages and only his cabbages. For those who need a refresher: Gryffindor house is full of brave and reckless souls, Ravenclaw is the wise house, Hufflepuff is loyal and just, and Slytherin house is for the ambitious and cunning. Here’s where the ATLA characters would be sorted at Hogwarts.

Suki: Gryffindor

Suki is a Gryffindor through and through. She is both brave and courageous but thankfully lacks the recklessness that too many Gryffindors possess.

What would her life at school be like? While at Hogwarts, Suki meets Sokka, and they immediately butt heads but soon become friends over their love of quidditch. She helps him with his schoolwork. During her second year, she becomes the keeper for Gryffindor’s quidditch team and becomes seeker in her fifth year.

After Hogwarts, she’d follow her parents’ footsteps and becomes an Auror. She marries Sokka before dying while on the job. We’ll talk about Sokka’s life after her later on.

Ty Lee: Hufflepuff

Ty Lee might be best friends with Azula and Mai, but she would have preferred a more peaceful life as an acrobat. She’s also highly loyal to Mai even when Azula is at her worst. And when I imagine a Hufflepuff, Ty Lee fits that picture almost perfectly.

At Hogwarts, she sticks close to Mai and Azula but distances herself from Azula in her sixth year with Mai. She also cheers the Slytherin team on from the stands. She excels in Herbology and Divination and likes spending time with magical creatures.

After Hogwarts, she befriends Suki, Sokka, Toph, Aang, and Katara. She joins a traveling circus troupe (like in the show) and pursues magical art on the side. When she’s back in town, she stays with Zuko and Mai and volunteers at Iroh’s tea shop (which I’ll talk about later).

Mai: Slytherin

Mai was only friends with Azula to get ahead in life and get closer to Zuko. At first, she might have had a genuine friendship with her, but that stopped when Azula started going crazy. That’s why I had to put her in Slytherin.

At Hogwarts, she excels in Defense Against the Dark Arts but prefers her Charms and Herbology classes. She also joins the Slytherin quidditch team as a chaser during her sixth year despite protests from her parents and Azula.

After Hogwarts, she marries Zuko and is initially a stay-at-home mother, like her mother was, before finding her passion at Iroh’s tea shop. While there, she experiments with new tea recipes and sells charmed objects to protect people on the side.

Ozai: Slytherin

Ozai is the perfect example of a true Slytherin. He knows what he wants, and he is willing to do anything (even kill a child) to get it. At Hogwarts, he’s a beater for his house, constantly aiming for his brother when they play against each other.

He’d also excel at History of Magic, Alchemy, and Flying. He also has an affinity for Legilimency (a specialized type of memory magic), which comes in handy after Hogwarts. Speaking of life after Hogwarts, he’d become a legislator in the Wizengamot before taking over as Minister of Magic early in his adult life.

Azula: Slytherin

Just like her father, it’s no shock Azula was sorted into Slytherin. Honestly, she is exactly like Bellatrix (they’d definitely be close friends if they were in the same universe). At Hogwarts, she excels in all her classes except Muggle Studies, History of Magic, and Defense Against the Dark Arts.

Her favorite classes are Potions because it’s close to her common room, but she also dabbles in dark magic. From her second year until Zuko graduates, she is a beater for the Slytherin team. After he leaves, she becomes the seeker and tries unsuccessfully to break his records.

After Hogwarts, she marries a pure-blood wizard from a well-off family to please her father. Instead of pursuing a career, she stays at home and networks to gain better status among other pure-blood families. She also convinces her father to disown Zuko.

Zuko: Slytherin

Zuko may be a good guy by the end of the show, but he was sneaky and ambitious before that. And despite him being brave enough to fight both his father and sister in Avatar: The Last Airbender, he’s much more of a Slytherin than a Gryffindor.

During his time at Hogwarts, he’d be a chaser on the quidditch team before playing beater and keeper the next two years. In his fifth year, he becomes the seeker until he finishes school. He’d excel in Defense Against the Dark Arts and takes Muggle Studies against his father’s orders.

After school, he thought about pursuing dragonology but settled on a Ministry of Magic job while helping Iroh’s shop during the weekends and evenings. He’d also marry Mai and be much happier with his friends and her than he ever was with his father and sister.

Toph: Gryffindor

Toph is one of the most reckless and brave characters in all of Avatar: The Last Airbender. But it works for her. Despite her disability, she makes the most of her life and doesn’t let anything get her down or hold her back. That’s why she’s the perfect example of a Gryffindor.

As she is blind, she doesn’t play quidditch (or even enjoy flying), but she rules at Gobstones, a wizard game similar to marbles where the pieces squirt smelly liquids at the players. She’d also do well in Herbology but wouldn’t try hard in any of her classes.

After Hogwarts, she becomes one of the best Aurors of her time, quickly rising through the ranks to become Captain. She’d retire around 50 and live with Sokka after Suki dies. They’d never pursue a relationship but would raise each other’s kids together. She’d also pick up painting in retirement; she doesn’t do well at it, according to Sokka.

Sokka: Hufflepuff

Many people might disagree with me and say Sokka is a Gryffindor, but Sokka is a Hufflepuff. He might be reckless and brave, but everything he did was for his family and friends. He also falls in love fast, which for some reason feels like a Hufflepuff thing to do.

While at school, he’d be the best Hufflepuff beater Hogwarts had ever seen. He would also struggle with his classes, but Suki helps him achieve his full potential. His favorite class is Defense Against the Dark Arts, but he also likes helping First Years master flying.

After Hogwarts, he and Suki would marry young. He’d also be an Auror for a few years until Suki’s death. Afterward, he settles down and changes careers to be a Cursebreaker. As a widower, he moves in with Toph to raise his children with a mother figure.

Katara: Ravenclaw

It pains me to say this, but there’s only one central ATLA character that is a Ravenclaw. Katara joins Aang on his quest to master the elements so she could learn more waterbending techniques. And she’s pretty creative by using other bending styles to advance her own skills.

Her best class is Transfiguration and Charms. She also excels in Potions, but she doesn’t love it like her other classes (blame the professor). She’s also the keeper for the Ravenclaw quidditch team from her second to fourth years before quitting to focus on her studies.

After Hogwarts, she’d marry Aang. She starts her career as a healer at St. Mungo’s before deciding to be a traveling healer to join Aang with his job. On the side, Katara would also try to pursue spell creation and master nonverbal and wandless magic.

Aang: Hufflepuff

Look at him and tell me he’s not a Hufflepuff. You can’t. While Aang is brave, he would prefer a peaceful life. He only takes down Fire Lord Ozai to save his friends and avenge the deaths of the Air Nomads. He also reminds me of Newt Scamander for some reason, so it kind of fits that he’s a Hufflepuff.

Aang’s best talent is flying (obviously), but he does well in Divination and Care of Magical Creatures. He’s also always caught playing pranks with Sokka and Toph. For one year, he’s a chaser for the Hufflepuff team but quits because it’s too competitive for him; he prefers flying for the fun of it.

After Hogwarts, he’d spend a lot of time traveling and flying around the world as a Magizoologist, much like Newt Scamander. He’d specialize in flying creatures like dragons but would constantly search for new species. He’d also be happy married to Katara.

Iroh: Hufflepuff

Put your pitchforks down and let me explain. You’re probably saying Iroh is the perfect Gryffindor or Slytherin. But he wants a peaceful life too much to be one of those. He literally quit trying to get into Ba Sing Se because his son died. After that, he spent his life just traveling with his nephew.

At Hogwarts, Iroh was a chaser for his house’s quidditch team, but only because he likes the wind in his hair and making new friends. He’d also spend a lot of time with the House Elves in the kitchens learning new recipes for cakes, cookies, and teas. His best classes were Herbology and Potions.

Immediately after Hogwarts, Iroh would be recruited as a Cursebreaker. He’d retire and start running his own tea shop (exactly like the ATLA finale). He sells magical and muggle teas. The bestseller is his calming draught tea that he somehow makes taste just like honey tea.
