25-year-old Emma Corrin is known for playing Princess Diana in the fourth season of The Crown on Netflix, for which they won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. Considering the England-born Corrin was landing their very first screen roles as recently as 2017, their rise to success is truly unprecedented.

Now, Netflix has a new show in the works, and Corrin is set to play the lead. The show is based on a book that caused enormous controversy in the subsequent decades due to its “obscenity.” Countries that considered banning the book included the United States, Canada, Australia, India, and Japan.

Netflix pays attention to their audiences, and the way we’ve been devouring shows like Bridgerton, Sex/Life, and Easy has not gone unnoticed.

Let’s admit it, guys: We as a society are proving through our viewing habits how thirsty we are for some hot, hot content––preferably the kind that takes place between good-looking British people in the 19th and 20th centuries. Why we love this so much in America, I do not know.

Read on to learn more about Corrin’s upcoming role, and the extremely controversial book Netflix has chosen as the basis for their next series. Netflix is set to begin principal photography for the show in the UK as soon as this fall.

Classic of British Literature or Obscene Trash?

Lady Chatterley’s Lover is a story about a young woman, Lady Chatterley, who is married to the handsome, upper-class Sir Clifford Chatterley. Sir Clifford is paralyzed from the waist down from an injury in war, and he shows little concern for his wife’s feelings and needs. You see where this is going yet?

Through a steamy affair with her gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors, Lady Chatterley discovers the importance of being fulfilled not just intellectually, but physically. Themes of classism, the search for integrity, and dissatisfaction run throughout the story.

And of course, all those “naughty” passages that caused multiple governments to try to ban the book just a few decades back will be celebrated by Netflix.

Netflix states in a press release about the upcoming show,

Based on the classic D.H. Lawrence novel, a story well ahead of its time, we follow the life of Lady Chatterley, a woman born to a life of wealth and privilege, who soon finds herself married to a man that she eventually falls out of love with.

Lady Chatterley engages in a torrid affair with a gamekeeper on their English estate, discovering more desire and intimacy than she thought possible. When she realizes that she has fallen heart and soul, she breaks all traditions of the day and seeks happiness with the man she loves.

All the Actors Confirmed So Far

Lady Chatterley will be played by none other than Emma Corrin. 31-year-old Jack O’Connell, who is known for playing James Cook in Skins, is also tied to the upcoming series, but it’s unclear which role he’ll play. I have a hunch he’ll be playing gamekeeper Oliver Mellors, and as a BAFTA-Award-winning actor, he’s ready to give this role his all.

The only other cast member Netflix has confirmed is Matthew Duckett, who is an incredible theater actor. It’s likely he’ll play Sir Clifford, Lady Chatterley’s neglectful husband.

If you loved Emma Corrin as Princess Diana in The Crown, make sure you add this one to your list.
