Grey’s Anatomy certainly has a lot of surprises in store for fans this season.

Viewers were left speechless following the Season 17 premiere after Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) returned. You can read all about our reactions here. However, it looks like he’s not the only alum who’ll be making an appearance this season.

Read on to learn more about what’s in store for Season 17 and who we think could be returning.

Next Week’s Promo Has Us Scratching Our Heads

For those who don’t watch Grey’s anymore (it’s OK, it’s been on for a long time), Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) has been diagnosed with coronavirus. She’s not doing very well, hence the reason why she’s been reunited with McDreamy in a dreamscape.

While Derek’s return felt like enough to satisfy die-hard Grey’s fans, the promo for the next episode definitely teases a return of “another person from her past.”

In the promo, Meredith notices a figure in the distance. She yells to the person to see who it is, but he or she is never revealed.

The Cast is Playing Coy

Following last night’s episode, Pompeo took to Twitter to tease fans about next week’s reveal, writing, “If you really think about it… there’s a lot of people it could be.”

What does this tweet mean? Could multiple people be returning in Meredith’s dream? Meanwhile, Kevin McKidd, who plays Owen Hunt and also directed last night’s episode, hinted at more character’s returns.

“I say nothing. But you know, it’s a great premise. What I love about this is that COVID — many people who have had COVID report that in the night time, they get these night visions and strange dreams and [it’s] very hard to sleep and it’s all lucid dreaming,” he told Entertainment Tonight.

“So this opportunity to do what we’re doing with the character of Meredith [through our storytelling] is truly [remarkable].”

OK, so who could this person be? Let’s get into some of the possibilities.

Lexie Grey

Because Meredith is in this weird limbo between life and death, there’s a good chance she can only see people who have already died, right? Meredith’s half-sister, Lexie Grey, tragically passed away following a plane crash many seasons ago, so maybe she’s the person Meredith sees on the beach.

George O’Malley

George O’Malley’s death has to be one of the most tragic Grey’s deaths of all time, so there’s no doubt fans would love to see him back. He was always close to Meredith (he was even in love with her for a bit), and we know how hard she took his death.

Plus, because George was such a fan-favorite character, we could see the producers wanting to bring him back for the fans.

Her Parents

While this is certainly a possibility — they’re both dead, after all — we don’t think Meredith is seeing her parents in this dream. Meredith was never particularly close with her mother and father, so we don’t know if she’d be smiling if she saw them in her dream.

Somebody Not Dead

If we’ve learned anything over the past 17 seasons it’s that truly anything is possible. With that being said, could we potentially see Cristina Yang return next week? Cristina is obviously Meredith’s best friend, and though she’s not dead, we haven’t seen her in about seven seasons.

Izzie Stevens, Callie Torres, Arizona Robbins, and April Kepner are all former characters who aren’t dead, but Meredith was never really close to any of them. If someone who isn’t dead is going to return, our money is on Cristina.
