With season three of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series on the way, I’ve gotten to rewatching the show and listening to all the songs again. And let me just say, I love this show now more than when I first watched it. So, as I do with every franchise I love, it’s time for the HSM:TM:TS characters to get sorted at Hogwarts. I’ll talk about what house they’d be in and what their lives at and after Hogwarts would be like. Now, let’s get sorting!
As a refresher: Gryffindor is the house for the brave and reckless, Ravenclaw for the creative and wise, Slytherin for the ambitious and cunning, and Hufflepuff is the house for the loyal and hard-working.
Even though Howie had a minor role in season two, he was one of my favorite characters. Howie would be sorted into Gryffindor because he goes after what he wants, speaks his mind, and stands up for those he cares about. A great example of this is when he fights for Kourtney despite them going to rival schools.
While at Hogwarts, Howie would look forward to Frog Choir practice every week. He’d also excel in Charms. After Hogwarts, Howie would start as a solo traveling musician before being recruited into a troupe. After a few years, I think he’d settle down with Kourtney (I’ll get to her in a bit) and help with her shop.
Lily was a primary antagonist of season two, but that’s not why I put her in Slytherin. (It did help, though.) She was willing to transfer schools to get the lead role in Beauty and the Beast and steal equipment from East High to win a competition. That’s why she’s a Slytherin.
Lily would be a quick study in Transfiguration and Potions. I can also see her being a Seeker on the quidditch team her last three years, as well as a member of the Frog Choir. After Hogwarts, Lily would seek further education at the Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts to become a famous actress.
Mr. Mazzara: Gryffindor
It was a bit tough sorting Mr. Mazzara; then I realized most Gryffindors have a stubborn streak in them. And that describes Mazzara in the first season to a tee. Mazzara was passionate about S.T.E.M. and took a lot of convincing to get on board with the drama club’s antics.
At Hogwarts, Mazzara would be the top student of his year, becoming Prefect his fifth year and Head Boy his seventh. His favorite class is by far Potions. He’d leave Hogwarts to pursue a career in Alchemy, wanting to follow in the footsteps of Nicolas Flamel.
Miss Jenn: Hufflepuff
I went back and forth between Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff for Miss Jenn’s Hogwarts house, but ultimately Hufflepuff won out. Yes, she’s creative and witty. But her loyalty to the East High drama club is what has been driving her since her first day as their teacher.
Miss Jenn would have her hand in every extracurricular during her first four years at Hogwarts. However, by her fifth year, she’d have settled down with Frog Choir and excelled in her Divination classes. Miss Jenn would work at a desk in the Ministry for a few years before switching careers to teach.
Every once in a while, you stumble across a character who just radiates Hufflepuff energy, and for HSM:TM:TS, it’s Seb. He’s one of the most happy-go-lucky characters that I’ve seen in years. He’d thrive in Hufflepuff.
While at Hogwarts, Seb would love Care of Magical Creatures class because it reminds him of home. He’d also be a part of the Frog Choir and be a Chaser on the Quidditch team. After Hogwarts, Seb would work in the Ministry for the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.
While he worked for the Ministry, he’d also be a licensed breeder of various magical creatures. The only animal he’s not permitted to raise are dragons, but that’s only because Carlos doesn’t want their home to accidentally burn down in the middle of the night.
When I look at Carlos, I see a brave and strong character, but I also see creativity, wit, and wisdom. And though his bravery to be himself every second of the day is admirable, his creativity is the reason he’s confident enough to do that. That’s why Carlos would be a great addition to Ravenclaw.
Carlos’s worst class would be Care of Magical Creatures, which is how he and Seb grew closer. Seb tutored him, and Carlos brought Seb into Frog Choir. After Hogwarts, Carlos would team up with Kourtney to open a clothing shop on Diagon Alley.
In addition, Carlos and Seb would have had a few rough patches early in their relationships (like in HSM:TM:TS), but they’d still be going strong when they left school. They have a home in the middle of the countryside, where Seb’s magical creatures can roam freely.
Ashlyn would fit right in with Ravenclaw students. In season one, we got a glimpse at how talented and creatively inclined she was. But in season two, she showed how witty, wise, and intelligent she could be. I think the Sorting Hat would sense that within seconds of being on her head.
At Hogwarts, Ashlyn would be one of the top students, a Prefect her fifth and sixth years, and Head Girl her seventh year. She’d also be part of the Frog Choir. After Hogwarts, she’d become a famous fiction author and songwriter in both the Muggle and wizarding worlds.
Big Red: Hufflepuff
While it would have been easy to put Big Red in Gryffindor because he reminds me of Ron Weasley, I don’t think he’s a good fit for that house. He supports his friends in everything, going so far as joining the drama club in season two to be closer to them. I can’t imagine him feeling at home in any other house.
Big Red would have excelled in Potions and Transfiguration, but honestly, he would have done well in all of his classes. In addition, he’d have been convinced to join Frog Choir his last year by Ricky and Ashlyn. After Hogwarts, he’d be a Potioneer and run a shop next to Kourtney and Carlos’s on Diagon Alley.
I couldn’t imagine the Sorting Hat ever placing Kourtney in any other house than Ravenclaw. She’s quick on her feet, creative, and wiser than any other character in HSM:TM:TS. I mean, she’s able to design amazing costumes at the drop of a hat for any play East High puts on!
Kourtney would have been one of the best Charms and Transfiguration students in Hogwarts. But her interests would skew toward designing clothes for her fellow students that still adhered to the dress code. In addition, she’d also start dating Howie during their sixth year.
After Hogwarts, she would open a clothing store in Diagon Alley with Carlos; she’d design the clothes while Carlos ran the business side and did the tailoring. She and Howie would take a break while he spent time traveling with his troupe but would end up together when he was ready to stay put.
Much like Lily, Gina was an antagonist at the beginning of her story. But she eventually grew because of her friends. Before that, she was blinded by her ambition. She was sneaky, cunning, and willing to hurt people to get ahead.
I think Gina would have started school at Beauxbatons before transferring to Hogwarts halfway through her second year. She’d immediately join Frog Choir and would be a Chaser for her house’s Quidditch team starting her third year. After Hogwarts, she’d become a professional Quidditch player on the same team as E.J.
While E.J.’s motivations behind his sleazy behavior in season one weren’t necessarily nefarious, they weren’t great. I think he just wanted to be seen as the best actor and partner for Nini, so when things didn’t go his way, he reverted to stereotypical Slytherin behavior.
At Hogwarts, E.J. would have been one of the best Chasers on Slytherin’s Quidditch team his second year before becoming the Seeker his fifth year. (Lily would take over for him when he left school.) After Hogwarts, he’d be recruited to the Montrose Magpies professional Quidditch team.
Ricky is a Hufflepuff through and through, and you can’t convince me otherwise. He’s not wise enough to be Ravenclaw, cunning enough for Slytherin, or reckless enough for Gryffindor. But you know what he is? A hard-working, loyal, and patient friend.
While at Hogwarts, Ricky would have excelled in Transfiguration. He’d also join Frog Choir his fourth year to impress Nini (it worked, but they still wouldn’t end up together in this universe). After Hogwarts, he’d take a desk job at the Ministry but spend all of his free time helping Big Red run his shop.
This might come as a shock, but Nini is a Slytherin. I’ve seen people plead their cases for her being a Ravenclaw or Gryffindor, but her ambitions are what drive her more than anything. And while we’ve yet to see her dark side, she has been a bit prideful during most of the series.
Nini would have done well in all her classes, but her focus would have been more on songwriting and Frog Choir. Once she’d left Hogwarts, she’d join Ashlyn in her songwriting and fiction writing endeavors, and Nini would also become a famous writer in both Muggle and Wizarding worlds. And no, she doesn’t settle down romantically because she prefers her work.
