Until recently, Peacemaker was one of the more obscure characters from DC Comics — but that all changed when Peacemaker was added to James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

John Cena’s popularity meant that suddenly everyone was curious about this kinda obscure comic book character. Even DC updated Peacemaker’s design to match Cena’s likeness and made him more active in the comics.

Now, Peacemaker will get to star in his very own 8-episode series. Here’s everything we know about the show so far.

What Can We Expect From Peacemaker?

The original Peacemaker first appeared in comics back in 1966, so there’s plenty of material to draw from.

However, it’s unclear which direction the series will go. Gunn could tell an origin story or carry on after the end of The Suicide Squad. Details on the Peacemaker series have been scarce, as WarnerMedia will keep any key details secret until The Suicide Squad hits theaters in August. Gunn doesn’t want any spoilers out there before audiences get to see the movie.

That also means that there is no trailer available as of yet. We can see Peacemaker in trailers for The Suicide Squad, though, so that will have to tide you over for a while. We can likely expect to see a Peacemaker trailer after the movie has debuted.

We did get a few details from Gunn during an interview with Empire Magazine: “He’s not a good guy. And he wears the goofiest costume you’ve ever seen in your life.”

He also explained why he chose to explore this character in a new series:

“Peacemaker has a clear set of ideals that I find really interesting. You know: ‘I want peace no matter how many men, women, and children I need to kill to get it.’ Sounds like nonsense, but it also makes a lot of sense. And you see in John’s performance how he does not feel good about it — something I thought was the seed of an entire eight-episode show.”

Cast and Crew

John Cena will obviously reprise his role that we’ll soon see in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Cena isn’t just the star, either; he will also serve as co-executive producer for the HBO Max series.

As for the rest of the cast, here’s everyone we know so far:

  • Steve Agee: John Economos
  • Danielle Brookes: Leota Adebayo
  • Christopher Heyerdahl: Captain Locke
  • Jennifer Holland: Emilia Harcourt
  • Chukwudi Iwuji: Clemson Murn
  • Nhut Le: Judomaster
  • Robert Patrick: Auggie Smith
  • Freddie Stroma: Adrian Chase
  • Lochlyn Munro: Larry Fitzgibbon
  • Annie Chang: Sophie Long
  • Alison Araya: Amber

Writer/director James Gunn is producing the series. Aside from running the show, he also wrote every episode and will direct five out of eight of them. The other three episodes will be helmed by Jody Hill (The Righteous Gemstones), Rosemary Rodriguez (The Walking Dead), and Brad Anderson (Titans).

When Can We Expect the Series to Debut?

Unfortunately, we’ve got a while to wait before Peacemaker hits the small screen. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, HBO Max Chief Casey Bloys revealed the release date. Currently, the plan is to release the eight-episode series in January 2022. It will stream on HBO Max.

If it makes you feel any better, Gunn confirmed that filming for season 1 has already wrapped. He says that all “8 astounding episodes” are “in the can.”

It’s likely that the show will require time for adding special effects (like all comic book and superhero movies), so that January 2022 release seems pretty plausible.

For the time being, we’ll have to remain entertained with John Cena’s antics.

The former pro wrestler has described his vigilante character as a “douchey Captain America,” and he’s having fun with it. He recently showed up on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Alongside James Gunn and co-star Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn)… dressed in his Peacemaker costume.

Gunn joked that Cena stole the outfit, and they won’t get to make a season 2 if he won’t give it back. Earlier this year, Gunn also joked about Cena taking his costume home so he could take a nap in it.

According to Cena, though, “I’ve learned that if you just keep the costume on, they don’t ask for it back.”
