Cobie Smulders is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as former Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Maria Hill in next year’s Secret Invasion, a Skrull-focused series.

Maria Hill Is Back

Secret Invasion will be the first time Smulders will appear in the MCU since 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Hill was introduced in 2012’s The Avengers as the close friend of Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. Since, she has appeared in several Marvel projects, including guest starring in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which ran for seven seasons starting in 2013.

In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Hill helped Fury, Captain America, Black Widow, and Falcon defeat HYDRA. She returned in Avengers: Age of Ultron to aid the superheroes against Ultron. Hill and Fury appeared in the post-credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War before appearing again in Avengers: Endgame after being resurrected by Bruce Banner.

Smulders also appeared in Spider-Man: Far From Home, but not as Maria Hill. She played a Skrull named Soren disguised as Maria Hill in the film.

Hill’s first appearance in the comics was 2005’s New Avengers #4 by Brian Michael Bendis and David Finch. She has also been featured in many animated series and video games.

Pulled From the Comics

Secret Invasion was announced in December 2020, with Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn reprising their roles as Nick Fury and Talos.

Kevin Feige expressed that he is excited about the show and can’t wait for the fans to see it.

“We’re interested in the political paranoia aspect of Secret Invasion and really showcasing the stars with Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn, two amazing actors that you want to have in any series, and we’re very lucky to have them.”

When asked why Secret Invasion would be a show instead of a movie, Feige said it was the best way to capture the story.

“That’s the sort of primary focus of that and, of course, it will tie into other things and the Skrulls in ways you haven’t seen before, but yes, anything could happen. Wise words – but we wanted to do that as a series because it would allow us to do something different than we’ve done before.”

The show is based on the 2008-2009 Marvel Comics event of the same name by Brian Michael Bendis, Leinil Francis Yu, Mark Morales, and Laura Martin. The event saw the Skrulls acting on a long-term plan to invade Earth by taking the place of the most influential and recognizable superheroes.

Kingsley Ben-Adir also joined the cast as the series’ lead villain, whose identity is still unknown. Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, Killian Scott, Christopher McDonald, and Carmen Ejogo have also been cast in unnamed roles.

The show is a Disney+ exclusive with six episodes on the way for the 2022 release. Kyle Bradstreet (Mr. Robot) is the head writer for the series. Thomas Bezucha and Ali Selim are directing the episodes. Filming officially started in October 2021 after being pushed back from July.
