In case you haven’t heard yet, Marvel’s next Disney+ show is about to drop! The series, What If…? will be the first animated series that focuses on multiple heroes from the MCU.

Heading Back Into the Multiverse

What If…? will explore what would happen if major moments in the MCU were different. It’s a look at alternate timelines, reimagining noteworthy events and exploring the infinite possibilities in the newly-minted multiverse.

If you’re a big MCU fan, you might want to pay attention. Head writer AC Bradley made it very clear that everything in the show is considered to be official.

“The events of What If…? are canon. It’s part of the MCU multiverse,” Bradley told IGN. “The multiverse is here. It is real, and it is absolutely fantastic, people.”

So, what would happen if those big events from the Sacred Timeline went differently? In What If…? we’ll see Peggy Carter (played by Hayley Atwell) become a super-soldier instead of Steve Rogers. Spider-Man is a zombie hunter, and Iron Man and Captain America are among the undead. And what if T’Challa becomes Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill? You’ll have to tune in to find out!

That’s not even everyone! We’d be here all day for me to list out all the MCU actors involved in What If…?

There is one returning actor that may prove emotional for fans: Chadwick Boseman. He makes his final, posthumous appearance as T’Challa in What If…? The star recorded his lines for the series shortly before he passed away.

MCU Actors NOT Reprising Their Roles in What If…?

There are a few MCU actors that will not reprise their roles in What If…? Robert Downey Jr., Brie Larson, and Chris Evans will not voice their animated counterparts for the series. It’s safe to assume that these big A-list names don’t come cheap. I can’t imagine it would be exactly easy to get everyone on board for the animated TV show, either.

Dave Bautista is another actor who won’t be back to voice his character, Drax. Someone on Twitter asked the Guardians of the Galaxy star why not, and his answer was diappointing to Marvel fans.

“Let’s start with I was never asked,” Bautista replied. Guardians director James Gunn was equally confused, simply replying, “What.”

Tom Holland won’t voice Spider-Man, either. His absence may be due to contractual obligations with Sony, which has a stake in the webslinger’s film rights. It could also be due to a busy schedule, as Holland has become one of the busiest actors in Hollywood.

What If…? Also Recast Black Widow

One more prominent MCU actor will not be voicing an animated counterpart: Scarlett Johansson.

It is easy to speculate that her absence is due to her feud with the House of Mouse. The news that she will not lend her voice to What If…? comes on the heels of Johansson suing Disney over breach of contract regarding the release of Black Widow.

The actress is suing the studio over loss of pay. According to her lawsuit, the choice to release Black Widow on Disney+ the same day it hit theaters was a breach of her contract. Johansson’s earnings are dependent on the film’s success at the box office.

Of course, What If…? was in production even before the release of Black Widow. That means that her absence could be due to any other number of reasons, from a busy schedule to having moved on from the role. Besides, it’s currently unclear how much Black Widow will even be in the series, so it may not have been worth it to Marvel to shell out the cash to bring in Johannson.

You won’t have to wait very long to catch the new animated series. What If…? will premiere on Wednesday, August 11, on Disney+.
