It’s been over 20 years since Smallville first graced television screens. It’s also been more than a decade since the finale aired. With the Arrowverse only having two shows renewed for another season, I’ve been wondering what became of the original DC show’s actors.
I looked up sixteen members of the main cast from the ten-year run and found out what they are doing now. Keep reading to see how many have returned to DC shows and movies since their time on Smallville.
It would be hard to miss Sam Witwer’s works today because of how diverse his credits are. After his one-season stint on Smallville, he went on to star in Being Human and portrayed Agent Liberty in Supergirl.
He has also voiced Darth Maul in several Star Wars projects, from video games to movies. He also voiced Rodian in the first episode of The Book of Boba Fett, Starkiller and Emperor Palpatine in several Star Wars video games, and Tenavik in Star Trek Online.
Outside of acting, he is The Crashtones’s front-man. Their last album, Revenge of the Crashtones, came out in 2019.
Before becoming Oliver Queen for Smallville, Hartley was initially cast as Arthur Curry in the unaired Aquaman television pilot. Thankfully, that never came to fruition because we got him as Green Arrow for five years after that.
After Smallville, he went on to star in Emily Owens, M.D. in 2012-2013; The Young and the Restless from 2014 to 2016; and This Is Us as Kevin Pearson. He also had a recurring role in Revenge and Mistresses. He also voiced Superman in Injustice (2021) and played Ty Swindle in A Bad Moms Christmas (2017).
In his personal life, Hartley married Sofia Pernas, a costar from The Young and the Restless, in 2021. Before marrying her, he had been married to Lindsay Korman and then Chrishell Stause.
Cassidy Freeman went on to several guest roles following Smallville‘s finale. Included in those roles are Sage in three episodes of The Vampire Diaries and Jack in one episode of Once Upon a Time.
Freeman has also starred in Longmire as Cady and The Righteous Gemstones as Amber. She also recently appeared as Cassie Tucker in The Forever Purge.
The actress welcomed a daughter earlier this year with her boyfriend. She has also gone into the music industry after forming The Real D’Coy with brother Clark and friend Andy Mitton.

Smallville is just one of the many iconic roles Vandervoort has had. Before Smallville, she was the lead in Instant Star; after, she went on to star in V and Bitten. She also returned to the DC universe when she appeared as Indigo, AKA Brainiac 8, on The CW’s Supergirl.
Outside of television, she appeared as Anna in 2017’s Jigsaw, Tanya in 2012’s Ted, and Rose Miller in 2019’s Rabid. She keeps her personal life private; most of her Instagram feed is aesthetic photos from her travels.
Not to be confused with his twin brother Shawn (who was in X-Men), Aaron has had a very diverse acting career. After Smallville, Ashmore had recurring roles in In Plain Sight, Lost Girl, and Warehouse 13.
Other notable roles Ashmore has had include John Jaqobis in Killjoys and Duncan Locke in Locke & Key. He’s set to appear in the upcoming show, SkyMed.
Aaron married Zoë Kate in 2014 and has two daughters with her. He’s also a Star Trek fan but has somehow not been in any Star Trek projects yet. I think it’s time for that change!
Jensen Ackles hasn’t slowed down since his time on Smallville. From 15 seasons of starring in Supernatural to his newest roles in The Boys and Big Sky, he’s here to stay. He’s also voiced Batman and Red Hood in three animated Batman movies.
Outside of acting for film and television, Ackles has had voice roles in four video games. He also directed six episodes of Supernatural and one of Walker (which stars his Supernatural brother, Jared Padalecki).
Ackles married his wife Danneel in 2010. A few years later, they had their first daughter; they’ve had a set of twins since then. Jensen opened Family Business Beer Company, a brewery, with his wife and her family.

Talk about typecasting! John Glover’s most recognizable roles have been villains, from Lionel Luthor in Smallville to Dr. Woodrue in Batman & Robin.
After Smallville ended, he went on to guest star in several shows. Some notable roles include Teddy Maddox in Fear the Walking Dead, Jared Andrews in The Good Wife, and Dyson in Tron: Uprising.
In 2016, Glover married Adam Kurtzman, a sculptor. He’s also been active with the Alzheimer’s Association after seeing his father battle the disease.
O’Toole had many roles prior to landing Martha Kent in Smallville. Something notable about her career before the show: she was Lana Lang in the 1983 film Superman III.
After Smallville ended, she went on to guest star in several shows but landed a recurring role on Halt and Catch Fire in 2014 and The Punisher in 2019. Also in 2019, she started a starring role in Virgin River.
Much like his on-screen wife, John Schneider had an extensive line of credits before Smallville. At the same time he filmed Smallville, he also starred in the animated series The Mummy as Rick O’Connell.
After leaving Smallville, Schneider appeared in season one of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, had a recurring role in 90210, and starred in The Haves and the Have Nots. His most recent roles include Poker Run (2021) and Christmas in Tune (2021). Schneider has also continued his music career, with his most recent album being released in 2019.
After leaving during season three of Smallville, Sam appeared in Glory Road. He also appeared in Smallville: Chloe Chronicles and made a guest appearance in season seven of Smallville. After, he went on to star in season one of Blue Mountain State and have a recurring role in ER.
In 2010, Jones went through two separate scandals. He served his sentence on drug charges from December 6, 2011, to October 12, 2012. After his release, he continued acting, and his most recent role was in the film All Light Will End.

After finishing his role on Smallville in 2004, Johnson starred in Flash Gordon, The Knick, Caught, and season six of Vikings. He also appeared as Sean Hotchner in two episodes of Criminal Minds. He’s set to star in Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin as Sheriff Beasley later this year.
In addition to his television work, Johnson has been in several films and did voice work in two video games (Splinter Cell: Blacklist and Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla). Most notably, he played Jack Hyde in the last two Fifty Shades movies and appeared in an animated Flash Gordon fan film as the titular character.
Since his time on Smallville as Lex Luthor, Rosenbaum stayed in the DC universe by voicing characters in several animated movies and shows. He also switched to Marvel to portray Martinex T’Naga in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
In addition to his film work with DC and Marvel, Rosenbaum also starred in TV Land’s Impastor. If you are a big gamer, you might have also heard his voice work in several games, including Batman: Arkham Knight. Rosenbaum also started a podcast in 2018 where he interviews celebrities called Inside of You. Tom Welling was his first guest.
After Smallville, Erica went on to play another DC character on screen as Alura Zor-El, Kara’s mother, in Supergirl from 2017 to 2019. She also reprised her Lois Lane role in the Batwoman episode of the CW’s crossover event “Crisis on Infinite Earths.”
Durance has starred or appeared in several television films since her time on Smallville. Her most recent role was in Color My World With Love in 2022.
In Durance’s personal life, she married David Palffy during her time on Smallville. Since their marriage, the couple has had two children together.

After Smallville, Allison Mack went on to have two notable roles. She was Amanda in Wilfred from 2012 to 2014 and Evelyn in the first season of Lost in Oz. The credit in Lost in Oz was a voice-only role, and her credit has since been removed following a scandal involving the NXIVM cult.
Mack was arrested on charges related to NXIVM. She pleaded guilty to two separate charges (racketeering and racketeering conspiracy) and started her three-year sentence on September 13, 2021.
Shortly after Smallville ended, Kristin went on to star as Catherine in The CW’s Beauty and the Beast. After that show ended, she also went on to star in CBC’s Burden of Truth. She’s also recently appeared in a few episodes of Amazon Prime’s Reacher.
Kreuk has kept her personal life somewhat private, but from 2017 to 2018, she was publicly linked to NXIVM along with Allison Mack. After the leader of NXIVM was arrested, Kreuk went on record to say she left the group in 2013 and had not been involved in anything illegal. Those claims have since been backed up by another actress who helped expose the cult.
While starring in Smallville, Tom also starred in the two Cheaper By the Dozen movies as oldest son Charlie. He also reprised his Clark Kent role in the Batwoman episode of The CW’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event with Erica Durance.
After Smallville, Welling has tried to keep his life private, but he shared that he married Jessica Rose Lee (founder of Saddle Club) and has two sons with her. His most notable role since Smallville was on Lucifer as Cain from the story of Cain and Abel.
