It’s no secret that Avatar: The Legend of Korra is one of my favorite television shows. It’s also no secret that I like sorting fictional characters into Hogwarts houses, as I’ve done quite a few already. So, of course, I had to sort some of the characters from Legend of Korra.
I’ll explain why they fit in their respective houses, what they would do at Hogwarts, and how their life would turn out after. And for those unfamiliar with Hogwarts houses: Gryffindor is for the bold and reckless, Slytherin for the sly and ambitious, Ravenclaw for the wise and creative, and Hufflepuff for the hard-working and loyal.
While Kya takes after her mother, Katara, I don’t think she’s also a Ravenclaw. She might be wise and caring like her mother and father, but she’s a little more courageous. She’s more likely to run into a fight to protect something than do a lot of soul-searching and learning.
That said, she’d be a top student during her years at Hogwarts. She’d do best in Potions but would also excel in Care of Magical Creatures. She wouldn’t join the Quidditch team. After Hogwarts, she’d become a healer at St. Mungo’s, quickly becoming a patient favorite.
Suyin Beifong: Gryffindor
While Suyin seems like a Ravenclaw at first, we need to look deeper into her motivations to sort her. She’s courageous and has some nerve, especially when she goes up against Kuvira, who she trained and is just as powerful as her. If that doesn’t sound like a Gryffindor thing to do, I don’t know what is.
At Hogwarts, Suyin would excel in Transfiguration. She’d also enjoy Divination class, but only because the professor is eccentric like her. After Hogwarts, she’d consider becoming an Auror but ultimately settle down in a Ministry job working at a desk.
And because I only talk about her, Lin, and Opal in this list, here’s where the rest of her family would be sorted. Bataar, her husband, and their sons (Bataar, Jr., and Huan) would be Ravenclaws. Her other sons, Wei and Wing, would be quickly sorted into Gryffindor.
Lin Beifong: Gryffindor
Like her sister, Lin would be sorted into Gryffindor. While she lacks their recklessness, she fits almost every other stereotypical Gryffindor trait. She has a short temper when she’s passionate about something and willing to sacrifice for those she cares about.
Lin would do everything to get approval from her professors (and her mother), so she’d work hard to excel in all of her classes, even Arithmancy and History of Magic. But her true passion is Quidditch; she is a Beater while Suyin is the Keeper. After finishing school, Lin would become an Auror, following closely in her mother’s footsteps. She’d rise in the ranks quickly, too.
Bumi may seem courageous like a Gryffindor, a bit creative like Ravenclaws, and ambitious like Slytherins. However, he doesn’t fit perfectly in any of those houses. He’s a Hufflepuff because when it comes down to it, his loyalty and hard work will always persevere.
Bumi does well in all of his classes, but he doesn’t try hard. It comes easily to him, but he would prefer spending time with magical creatures or on the Quidditch pitch as a Beater. After Hogwarts, he works in the Magical Creature department at the Ministry.
Kai grew a lot during the last two seasons of the show, but I still think that can’t change his true nature. He’s sneaky, which actually comes in handy sometimes. And not all Slytherins are evil, and Kai just proves this. I think he also has some Ravenclaw traits, but not enough to outweigh his Slytherin side.
At Hogwarts, Kai would slack off until he and Jinora became friends. After that, he’d excel in Charms. His favorite is Wingardium Leviosa. He’s also the Seeker for the Slytherin team his last three years. After Hogwarts, he’d run work at Jinora’s shop in Diagon Alley. (I’ll talk about that in a little bit.)
Ikki has a bright personality, which is fitting since she’s a Hufflepuff through and through. She is loyal to her friends and family. She’s also pretty peaceful when she’s not fighting in a literal war. I mean, just look at her interactions with the spirit animals in seasons three and four!
Ikki would love Care of Magical Creatures class so much; it’s a shock to see her indoors at all. She even skips Quidditch matches sometimes her first two years to talk to the squid in the Black Lake. She’d be recruited onto the Hufflepuff Quidditch team her third year.
After Hogwarts, she’d live with Kai, Jinora, and Meelo. And while she’d travel the world working for the Magical Creatures shop with her uncle Bumi, she’d also help out with Jinora’s shop. Her favorite animals to work with are occamies, nifflers, and baby dragons.
Like Ikki, Meelo is a Hufflepuff; the only difference is why. Where Ikki fits perfectly into the key traits most Hufflepuffs exhibit, Meelo just doesn’t fit into any of the other houses. And since Hufflepuff is also the home for those that don’t quite fit in, Meelo would be sorted there.
Meelo would love Care of Magical Creatures class like his sister. But his best course is surprisingly Astronomy. He’d be on the Quidditch team as a Beater–he’s the one who gets Ikki into playing. After Hogwarts, he would primarily work at Jinora’s shop.
In the Avatar universe, Opal was slightly different from her family as a nonbender. That doesn’t change in the wizarding world as the only Hufflepuff in her family. She doesn’t quite fit in any other house, and she’s typically a peaceful and hard-working person. It just makes sense for her to be in Hufflepuff.
At Hogwarts, Opal would do well in her classes to impress everyone, but she’d find herself drawn to Potions. And while she also loves flying, she doesn’t play Quidditch because it’s too aggressive for her. After Hogwarts, she’d be a traveling healer for a few years before settling down at St. Mungo’s.
If you had asked me to sort Tarrlok after only seeing him twice, he would have probably made it into Gryffindor. But then he shows his true colors when he fights Korra, which shifts him straight to Slytherin status. He’s sneaky, and I won’t forgive him even though he did kill Amon in the end.
Tarrlok would do extremely well in Defense Against the Dark Arts and History of Magic. He’d also be a Chaser on the Slytherin team. After Hogwarts, he’d be an Auror before trying to become Minister of Magic. However, he wouldn’t make it and would be stuck at a desk job for the rest of his life.
Like his brother, Amon would be sorted into Slytherin. He had some pretty big ambitions in season one, specifically wanting to take away all benders’ abilities. The Sorting Hat wouldn’t have to think long about where to put him.
Unlike his brother, Amon doesn’t do well in History of Magic or Defense Against the Dark Arts. He’s much more interested in Divination and Astronomy. Amon would be a Chaser on the Slytherin. After Hogwarts, he’d ruin his brother’s chance at becoming Minister of Magic.
Is it any surprise another villain from the series was sorted into Slytherin house? Unalaq betrayed his own brother and niece to bond with an evil spirit to get more power. He also tricks everyone into trusting him so that Korra would train under his watch.
While at Hogwarts, Unalaq would tirelessly study Charms, Transfiguration, and History of Magic. He’d also be the Keeper before being promoted to Seeker on his house’s Quidditch team. After Hogwarts, he’d be an Auror, but only because it allows him to train in Dark Magic under the radar.
I don’t think it’s any surprise Zaheer would be put in Slytherin mere seconds after the Sorting Hat touched his head. His ambitions were extreme: he managed to infiltrate Tenzin’s temple, and he was patient enough to work towards his goals. That’s a Slytherin by the books.
Unlike the other villains above him, Zaheer would never join the Quidditch team. It would take too much time from History of Magic, Divination, and Study of Ancient Runes (his three favorite classes). After Hogwarts, he’d be arrested for using forbidden ancient spells and sentenced to Azkaban.
Like the other villains, Kuvira is ambitious and willing to do whatever it takes to achieve her goals. For crying out loud, she aimed the spirit gun at her fiancé (well, ex-fiancé now). She even almost dies trying to get rid of the Avatar because Korra stood in her way.
Kuvira would excel in Defense Against the Dark Arts, Potions, and Charms. She’d also be the most ruthless Beater in Slytherin Quidditch history. After Hogwarts, she’d follow a similar path as Unalaq but would end up an Auror for the rest of her life instead of at a desk job.
Jinora couldn’t be in any other house than Ravenclaw. Look at her in seasons one and two; she almost always has her nose stuck in a book. Then in season four, she became the youngest master in airbending history. It’s just a given she’s in Ravenclaw.
Jinora is Head Girl her last year at Hogwarts, the top student every year, and has read almost every single book in the library. She wouldn’t play Quidditch, but she’d be cheering for the Hufflepuff team every match after her siblings start school.
After Hogwarts, she’d open a shop selling Divination tools, books, and helpful potions. She’d be one of the busiest shops on Diagon Alley. And while we only got a glimpse of her and Kai’s budding relationship in the show, I think they’d get married at around 20 years old.
I think it’s obvious, but Tenzin is a Ravenclaw. He’s wise and a bit creative when you see him fight. And while he is loyal to those he cares about, the most important thing to him (as we see when new airbenders are made) is the wisdom of the airbending masters before him.
Tenzin would follow in his father’s footsteps during his time at Hogwarts. He’d be the top student in Divination and Astronomy. He’d also be on the Quidditch team, dodging Bumi’s bludgers. After Hogwarts, he’d obviously be a professor. But after retiring, he’d help at Jinora’s shop on the weekends.
This one was tough because Bolin seems like the perfect example of a Hufflepuff at first glance. But when you actually consider what he does throughout the series, he’s always putting himself first. Bolin became an actor and then joined Kuvira’s army because he thought it would make him the most money and attention. He helped Korra because it could help him save himself.
At Hogwarts, Bolin would do well in Care of Magical Creatures and Charms. He’d also be the best in Flying class his first year. He’d be picked up onto his house’s Quidditch team as a beater during his second year. After Hogwarts, he’d become an actor in the muggle world for a few years before disappearing to work in the Magical Creatures department at the Ministry of Magic.
This is a little controversial, but Mako is a Hufflepuff. I’ve seen people say he’s Gryffindor or Slytherin, but those houses don’t fit his motivations. Mako might have stolen stuff with Bolin, but it was only to keep Bolin fed and safe after their parents died. And after Korra enters his life, everything he does is out of loyalty to his friends.
While Slytherin and Gryffindor have the biggest Quidditch rivalry, Bolin and Mako’s rivalry is legendary. Mako is a chaser on his team, so he has to dodge Bludgers left and right from his brother. In addition, Mako would do well in Transfiguration. After Hogwarts, he takes a while to settle on the right career for him, but he’d find his place as a Cursebreaker.
Asami Sato: Ravenclaw
It might seem like Asami would fit in with the courageous Gryffindor house, but she’s not reckless enough for that. She’s more creative and innovative, making her the perfect fit for Ravenclaw. However, I think it would take the Sorting Hat a little while to decide between the two houses.
Asami would excel in all of her classes, especially Transfiguration and Charms. She’d also be on her house’s Quidditch team as the Seeker. Once she finished school, she’d be one of the top inventors of the wizarding world. But she’d also play Quidditch with her friends every once in a while.
It’s no shock that the Avatar who didn’t hesitate to run headfirst into a fight is a Gryffindor. The Sorting Hat would be on her head no more than five seconds before announcing her house. She’s got every trait, good or bad, that Gryffindors typically exhibit.
At Hogwarts, she would be the top Defense Against the Dark Arts student every year. She would also join the Quidditch team as a beater after struggling in Flying class her first year. After Hogwarts, she’d join the Holyhead Harpies (an all-female Quidditch team) and marry Asami.
