Young adult book adaptation star Amandla Stenberg has been cast in the lead role for the upcoming Disney+ Star Wars: The Acolyte series.

Stenberg is the Only Cast So Far

Amandla Stenberg was cast in an unnamed leading role in the new series. They are currently the only cast member attached to the film, but we can expect more announcements in the coming months as filming gets closer.

Stenberg’s role is reported to be called Aura, but that could be a placeholder to keep the project a secret. Amandla’s breakout role was in 2012’s The Hunger Games as Rue. Soon after, they went on to star in many YA adaptations, including The Darkest Minds, The Hate U Give, and Everything, Everything.

They also recently appeared in the film adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen. This will be their first leading television role.

What Is ‘The Acolyte’ About?

Star Wars: The Acolyte has mostly been kept under wraps, as is common with Star Wars projects. But, we do know when it takes place.

The series is set about 50 years before the events in Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace, making it the first screen media to not occur during the Skywalker Saga. It will take place during the last days of the High Republic era.

Showrunner Leslye Headland (Russian Doll) described the series as a mystery thriller that will explore both sides of the force. It “will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers in the finals days of the High Republic era.”

The Acolyte was announced in April 2020 but was confirmed on Star Wars Day (May 4, 2020). The official title was announced during Disney’s Investor Day in December 2020.

The show is still in early production stages but is expected to start filming mid-2022. Like many Star Wars live-action series, it’s expected to have an eight-episode first season.

Based on what we know from the books, we won’t see many of our favorite characters. Still, we can hope that Yoda makes an onscreen appearance since he was active in the books. We might even see some characters from the books show up.

With the dark side emerging as well, we might also get to see Dark Plagueis the Wise, as well as young Palpatine training under him.

The High Republic Era is Being Explored

Star Wars unveiled plans to explore the High Republic era early in 2020. The stories take place 200 years before The Phantom Menace and see the Jedi Order in their prime. The High Republic-centric media come in novels, comic books, audio stories, and manga. The Acolyte will be the first time we see this period on screen.

The era is described as the height of power for the Galactic Empire, with Jedi being much more active than during the Skywalker Saga. At this point in time, the galaxy is still being explored, and people are expanding into the Outer Rim.

The enemies from the books include the Nihil, marauders from the Outer Rim, who are a threat to the Republic. Because of this, we can expect to see more conflicts and enemies that aren’t force-related. I can’t wait for this show to come out. I’m sitting on the edge of my seat in anticipation.
