HBO’s television adaptation of The Last of Us wrapped with Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann this week.

Druckmann Leaves Canada

Neil Druckmann, the writer-director of the series, announced he wrapped his part in directing the series on Nov. 7 with an Instagram post. The post featured a clapboard he used while directing his episodes.

“Alas… my time in Canada has come to an end,” Druckmann said in his post. “To the best tv crew in the world, thank you for your incredible work, your passion, and for making me feel so welcome! I will miss you terribly! Excited to return to Naughty Dog.”

Druckmann created the Last of Us games with Naughty Dog. He co-wrote the script with Chernobyl writer Craig Mazin.

A movie adaptation was planned in 2014 but was scrapped after creative differences between Druckmann and Sony. Sony wanted to do the project on a larger scale, while Druckmann wanted it to be created like an indie movie.

The show allows Sony to get their large-scale production while still feeling like Druckmann’s indie-style filming. Many of the game’s creators and crew will also be working on the show, including composer Gustavo Santaolalla.

You’ll Recognize the Cast

Bella Ramsey in Game of Thrones, Pedro Pascal in The Mandalorian

Ellie, the fourteen-year-old girl who might be the key to ridding the world of the Cordyceps brain infection, is portrayed by Bella Ramsey. You might recognize her as Lyanna Mormont from Game of Thrones or as Angelica in His Dark Materials.

Pedro Pascal will portray Joel, the survivor tasked with smuggling Ellie across the country. Pascal has had many significant roles, but you probably recognize his name from starring in The Mandalorian. He chose to take on the part out of numerous options after releasing the second season of The Mandalorian.

Tommy, Joel’s younger brother, is played by Gabriel Luna. Luna was asked to send in an audition tape, and he got the word the next day he booked the role. To prepare for the role, he was given a PlayStation 5 to play the games during production.

Merle Dandridge will play Marlene, the head of the Fireflies. Dandridge portrays Marlene in the games, too. Jeffrey Pierce, who portrays Tommy in the games, will portray Perry. Perry is a character made for the series.

Other cast members include: Anna Torv as Tess, a survivor who helps Joel smuggle Ellie out of quarantine; Nico Parker as Sarah, Joel’s daughter; Murray Bartlett and Con O’Neill as Frank and Bill, two survivors living out in the infected world; and Brad Leland as Mr. Adler, a character created for the series.

The show will also feature Clickers, the humans that a mutated strain of Cordyceps fungus has infected.

The Last of Us takes place 20 years after the United States suffers from an outbreak of Cordyceps.

The first game follows Joel as he smuggles Ellie out of the quarantine zone and across the post-apocalyptic United States while avoiding Clickers. Ellie is immune to the infection and could be the key to creating a vaccine.

A sequel was created seven years later in 2020, titled The Last of Us Part II.

The show will adapt storylines from the first game. The show is produced by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Naughty Dog, The Mighty Mint, and Word Games.

Gabriel Luna said fans can expect the series premiere sooner than expected. However, no date has been announced yet, but we can assume it will be released in 2022.

Though there is no release date yet, both games are available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
