An extremely exciting announcement has arrived from the HBO headquarters in New York City: The Weeknd is teaming up with the network to co-write, develop, and star in a brand-new, original series called The Idol. The show will tell the story of a woman, a pop singer, and her romance with a Los Angeles club owner with a secret: He’s the leader of a cult.

The Weeknd’s Acting Experience

The Weeknd, also known as Abel Tesfaye, is best known for his talent in the music world. The Canadian singer has won three Grammy Awards, five American Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, 19 Billboard Music Awards, 15 Juno Awards, and five SOCAN Awards.

This wildly successful musician has been dabbling in acting for a while now. He had a hilarious starring role as himself in 2019’s Uncut Gems alongside Adam Sandler. He also wrote an episode of American Dad! on TBS last year.

The Weeknd has also been a guest star on Saturday Night Live three times, and provided various voices in a 2020 episode of Robot Chicken called “Endgame.”

The Idol will be his first-ever lead role in a television show or film.

A Young Group of Creators

The creative team behind this new series is full of young talent.

The Weeknd, who is 31, will serve as co-creator alongside Sam Levinson and Reza Fahim. 36-year-old Levinson earned a BAFTA nomination for his work as the creator of HBO’s teen drama series, Euphoria. Levinson is also known for writing and directing Malcolm & Marie, which was released by Netflix in early 2021.

Reza Fahim, who is also in his thirties, spent many years as a nightlife entrepreneur in Los Angeles, founding unique and popular clubs like Tenants of the Trees in Silver Lake. Originally born in Tehran, Iran, Fahim fled to the United States with his family when he was still a child.

As a popular club owner, Fahim has rubbed shoulders with many celebrities, and he’s been good friends and business partners with The Weeknd since at least 2017. But it turns out he has a hidden talent for writing as well. He posted the announcement of The Idol on Instagram, writing “eternally grateful” as the caption. He also recently posted another old photo of himself and his future writing partner standing on a rooftop in Cannes, France, referencing their upcoming partnership.

The Weeknd joins a long list of talented vocalists who have taken their talents to the big screen. While the production schedule is still under wraps, we should be hearing updates soon about when this new program is expected to debut.

With over 75 million record sales under his belt, The Weeknd is one of the world’s best-selling musicians. He’s also one of the most-streamed artists on Spotify. His popularity, paired with Levinson and Fahim’s extensive background in Hollywood, is sure to help this show become a powerhouse.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see what kind of show comes out of the minds of these three talented creators and their team. With a giant network like HBO on their side, it seems like they might have a smash hit on their hands very soon.
