1883, the prequel to Kevin Costner’s Yellowstone, is set to premiere on Paramount+ in just two weeks! The streaming platform just teased fans with brand-new images of the main cast, and I haven’t been this excited about covered wagons since I played Oregon Trail as a kid.

The prequel to Paramount’s wildly successful Yellowstone focuses on the ancestors of the explosive Dutton family. Country music royalty Tim McGraw and Faith Hill star as James and Margaret Dutton as they trek from Texas to Montana. McGraw told Entertainment Weekly that he was in awe of Hill on set:

“To see my beautiful wife on horseback, firing guns, and having dirt all over her face, I just sit in awe. She’s a strong woman, anyway.”

Sam Elliott, the grizzled veteran of many classic Westerns, will lead the Duttons on their journey as Shea Brennan, while Billy Bob Thornton will appear as U.S. Marshall Jim Courtright. 1883 will reunite Elliott and Thornton onscreen for the first time since Tombstone. Isabel May will portray the Duttons’ daughter, Elsa.

Check out the new photos below to get one more sneak peek at the show before it premieres on December 19.

Original Post Continues

Yellowstone‘s prequel 1883 just announced the remaining cast members and released the first look into the Dutton family before they owned the largest ranch in the United States. 1883 will debut on December 19.

Some Familiar Faces Set to Star

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill will be starring as John and Margaret Dutton, the patriarch and matriarch of the Dutton family. McGraw and Hill have been married since 1996, and we finally get to see them play a married couple on screen. Both have won Grammy awards for their country music. McGraw was in Friday Night Lights and The Blind Side; Hill recently starred in Dixieland.

Sam Elliott signed on to portray Shea Brennan, a rugged cowboy with the sadness of his past plaguing him. He will be guiding the group from Texas to Montana. Elliott starred as Beau in The Ranch from 2016 to 2020.

Billy Bob Thornton will guest star as Marshall Jim Courtright. Much is still unknown about the character. Thornton recently wrapped season four of Goliath and starred in A Million Little Pieces.

Isabel May, best known for her starring role as Katie in Netflix’s Alexa and Katie, will portray the oldest Dutton daughter, Elsa. LaMonica Garrett also joined the cast as an unnamed character that will be Shea Brennan’s right-hand man. Garrett was in Designated Survivor.

Audie Rick (Kenobi: A Star Wars Story) will play John Dutton, Sr. as a child. Dawn Olivieri (Bright) will portray John Dutton’s sister, Claire, a widow described as sharp, fierce, and practical. Claire’s daughter, Mary Abel, will be brought to life by Emma Malouff (American Crime Story).

Josef, a European immigrant who will travel with the group, is portrayed by Game of Thrones‘ Marc Rissmann. Josef’s wife, Risa, will be portrayed by Anna Fiamora from A Shining Moment.

Martin Sensmeier will portray Sam, a Comanche Native American warrior. Sensmeier portrayed Martin in five episodes of Yellowstone. Noah Le Gros (A Score to Settle) will play Colton, a young cowboy who knows the ropes of wagon camping and has insights into the long journey from Texas to Montana.

James Landry Hébert (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) will play Wade, a young cowboy helping the group on their journey. Eric Nelsen is playing Ennis, another young cowboy assisting the group.

Gratiela Brancusi will portray Noemi, a recent widow with two young sons that joins the group. Alex Fine will play Grady, an experienced cowboy, and leader of six drovers that agrees to help the group round-up longhorn for the journey.

Amanda Jaros (Women of the Movement) will portray Alina, a weary but hopeful immigrant who speaks little English. Stephanie Nur (Four Women and a Funeral) and Nichole Galicia (Django Unchained) will portray prostitutes at a saloon in Fort Worth, Texas.

Our First Look at the Prequel Series

During Yellowstone’s season four premiere, we got a glimpse at the prequel series. All we hear is a voice telling us that the journey is hard, but it will be worth it in the end.

“I’ve heard a thousand stories, but none could describe this place. The road west is filled with failures. It was a dream, and the dream is coming true. We’re in the land of no mercy now.”

1883 will follow the Dutton family as they embark on their journey to Montana through the Great Plains. It’s been described as a “stark retelling of Western expansion” and an “intense study of one family fleeing poverty” in America.

The show started filming in Fort Worth, Texas, at the end of August. Taylor Sheridan, who created Yellowstone, also created the spinoff. Sheridan wrote all ten episodes of the show and serves as executive producer.

Other executive producers are John Linson, Art Linson, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, and Bob Yari.

What is ‘Yellowstone’?

Yellowstone follows the Dutton family in the present day, running the largest cattle ranch in the United States. The show portrays their struggles with their neighbors: a Native American reservation and a group of land developers. It stars Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, and Kelsey Asbille.

The show just started its fourth season and has gained millions of fans since its premiere in 2018.

1883 is not the only spinoff in the works. Under the working title 6666, a spinoff following the present-day Four Sixes Ranch in Fort Worth, Texas, is also planned. Not much is known about this spinoff.

December 19 can’t come soon enough.
